Norma's Fight!

Norma Villarreal grew up wanting to become a police officer and attended the University of Texas at San Antonio studying Criminal Justice. Although her life’s path took her in a different direction, Norma’s desire to serve her community remained strong and she remained committed to a life of service to her community and support of law enforcement.
Norma has devoted the better portion of her life volunteering in her hometown of San Antonio, including working with children at local churches, mentoring at-risk children in public schools, working with special needs individuals and volunteering at community events.
Norma’s support of law enforcement is steadfast. She has graduated from the following academies and remains an active member of the following organizations.
SAPD Citizens on Patrol – President and Vice-President – 2008 to present
SAPD’s Citizens Police Academy – 2010 graduate

In August of 2014, Norma accepted a temporary position as the Administrative Senior for APD’s Emergency Communications Division. In 2015, Norma promoted to Administrative Specialists, still as a temporary employee. Over the past two and a half years, Norma had demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities and has had a significant, positive impact on daily operations and morale; she is truly the cornerstone of the Division.
In September of 2016, Norma was diagnosed with Bilateral Breast Cancer and will have double mastectomy surgery on January 4, 2017. As a result, Norma will be unable to work for at least six weeks while she is recovering. As a temporary employee, Norma does not earn sick or vacation time and is not eligible for insurance coverage or paid leave. Norma has basic medical insurance however, the percentage of personal responsibility is high and the medical costs are significant. Although Norma has family in San Antonio, she is single and lives alone.
Norma has not asked for help, it is not in her character. However, as a law enforcement family we are bound by a code of honor and loyalty; we are our brothers and sisters keeper. After everything Norma has done and continues to do for us, this is our opportunity to help her.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to assist with Norma’s medical expenses and to offset lost wages while she is recovering. Please give what you are able in support of Norma in her time of need, as she has supported her community and law enforcement family.
