Northern Reach Rescue Network

Over 1,000 dogs in need have been brought in to care by Northern Reach in the year 2015, from various remote northern Ontario communities.  We are expecting 2016 to exceed that number.  About 75% of the dogs brought in are transported by Northern Reach to various rescues in southern Ontario, after a very brief time being fostered in Thunder Bay by our volunteers here.

Northern Reach connects with, and works with many volunteers in various remote communities that lack veterinary care and resources.   All the dogs we bring in are stray, starving, injured or surrendered dogs.  The volunteers who live in these communities locate the dogs in distress and deliver them to the airport for transport to Thunder Bay.  If necessary they are vetted for life threatening or painful injuries or illnesses.  25% are taken in by various local rescue groups, and the remainder are shuttled by van to southern Ontario to various rescue groups where they are immediately cared for and adopted.

Our costs include transportation costs for dogs to southern Ontario, and sending dog crates, food and blankets etc. via plane to the northern communities.  As well we send medical supplies and other various items to the volunteers in these communities so that they have them on hand to use in emergencies before the dogs are flown out.  Any dogs that arrive ill or injured are taken to the veterinary clinic and we pay the bill for those dogs/puppies.  When young puppies arrive we also need to purchase puppy formula, feeding bottles, medication for worms etc.  We also pay for the dog food and supplies for our temporary fosters here, to look after the rescued dogs.

At times we bring in dogs that have very high costs for veterinary care and right now we have two of these types of dogs in permanent foster care.  We call it a legacy adoption because we continue to pay for the costs for these dogs.

Many dogs that we bring in eliminate rocks and plastic the first several days because that is all they could find to eat.  So we must feed them a specialized gastric food so they are able to digest the food and hold it down.  This food is much more expensive than regular dog food.

We are currently not able to continue at the rate we are going because of the costs involved, although there are many dogs in need awaiting their lucky day when they get to fly out and start a new life. At this point we could be bringing in many more dogs than we are, however the bottom line is the money to be able to do so.

Every dog that comes in to care wins the lottery and we would love to help more of them.  Please consider donating to these beautiful creatures.  Thank you.  Our goal is to eliminate dogs in distress in remote northern Ontario.

We work in conjunction with Northern Spay and Neuter Program, Feeding Program for Northern Dogs, and several other rescue groups.  We are all part of the big picture of creating this change.
