Oceti Sakowin Sacred Water School
Donation protected
Late Summer while scrolling through my facebook newsfeed, I came across an article on Oceti Sakowin ( Mni Wiconi Sacred Water School). The school struck a cord with me because of its efforts to teach the children the importance of the environment while incorporating a cultural perspective. This school, in the midst of much adversity, makes it possible for the students ages 4-14 and their families, to continue protecting the Missouri River and sacred sites from the development of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).
In September, with help from the Tomaquag Museum, donated math and environmental material were received by an amazing team of men and women; Alayna Eagle-shield, Teresa Dzìeglewìcz, Blaze Starkey, and Savannah Jo Begay. Unfortunately the day that I donated the supplies, the school closed due to illness spreading among the children. With winter approaching and a lack of space and shelter, the school is in danger of more closings. I proposed the idea of a longhouse that would provide warmth, space, and storage for the school. (This is where you can help)
This is why I am asking for donations. In addition to existing contributions, $3,200 is needed for the materials and vehicles to transport to the site where the school will be built. A portion of donations, over initial expense, will be used to build additional shelves and seating witin the longhouse. Remaining funds will be given to the school budget and staff since they are volunteering their time for the cause.
Let us come together and show our support for the hard work of the teachers and the courage of the students of Mni Wiconi Sacred Water School. I am greatly appreciative of your contribution, I will follow up with all of the great progress. The children and staff are very excited for the longhouse, and you will make it possible! Katabatash (Thank You)
