PEGASO Mission

The PEGASO mission means future. It means helping out with space exploration which will assure a future to the mankind, as well as big benefits to the whole society.

We are four Italian students: Giulia Bassani (aerospace engineering), Francesco Maio (physics), Linda Raimondo (scientific high school) .

PEGASO is a biology experiment, carried for the first time in the Earth's stratosphere environment. It is focused on a particular cyanobacterium that, according to some hypothesis, is capable of shielding from cosmic radiations, energetic particles coming from space, harmful for human health.
Through this experiment we want to test this alga in the stratosphere (30 km from the surface), where there is no natural protection against radiations.
The experiment is based on the research of Team Space4Life and their experiment that will fly on the Moon next year.

In case of success and effective demonstration of this capability, we would have discovered a way to shield radiations which can be used by astronauts in open space and by the first colonies on Planet Mars.
