ORC: Protecting Journalists
ORC is a volunteer run cloud storage network that protects users from surveillance and puts them in control of their data. It's a decentralized, anonymous storage platform that makes it possible for journalists to safely store their data without ever needing to trust businesses, institutions or centralized servers.
ORC is a collaboration between two projects, ORC: Onion Routed Cloud and the PostScript Project. The PostScript Project was founded on the 17th of October 2017, the day after investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated in Bidnija, Malta.
Daphne was a relentless investigative journalist who dedicated her life to seeking out the truth — eventually paying the ultimate price for it. The importance of what Daphne worked towards - freedom of the press, transparency in government, truth and justice - cannot be denied. People in a functioning democracy need an uncontaminated supply of truthful information.
Investigative journalists like Daphne put their lives on the line to give us that, but they shouldn’t have to. We’ve created this to give these heroes an extra level of security, another tool to help them do their work.
We are raising money to fund a third party security audit so that we can help deploy ORC in good faith for journalists. In addition, funds will support the further development of ORC and benefit Counterpoint Hackerspace, a community space for sharing, creation, collaboration, research, development, mentoring, and of course, learning.
