The Story behind “Crucify Thyself”
As a teenager I was obsessed with the Orthodox Christian zine, Death to the World. With their visceral style and uncompromising ethos, they inspired me to pack my bags and go live in a monastery for two years. Those were two of the best years of my life and now that I’m back in the world (in diaconal school and working with non-profits) the zine continues to push me and help unite me to hundreds of fellow fans.
No longer satisfied with merely reading DTTW and desiring to increase the presence of Orthodoxy within alternative subcultures, I began to slowly create the framework of what would become Crucify Thyself. Crucify Thyself will provide a source of traditional Orthodox quotes, excerpts, stories, essays, interviews and artwork to Orthodox Christians of all ages. In addition, this zine will focus on topics currently affecting our society such as abortion, Islam, yoga, homosexuality, ecumenism and euthanasia.
The only thing stopping me from making Crucify Thyself a reality is the expanding list of things I need and their associated costs. Below is a detailed list of everything based on a startup, per-issue and yearly basis. I’ve spent almost a month researching these prices and they are all very realistic considering what services will be rendered. The graphic designers and artists I have been working with are amazing and charge very reasonable fees. The website designer is providing a great deal for a very small fee. I will be printing the zine myself to save on costs. By the end of the year, I will form an LLC and Crucify Thyself will be part of the "Die His Death Publications" family.
Startup Costs:
Logo and Additional Zine Designs: $100
T-Shirt Designs: $200
Shirt Printing: $400
Merchandise: Stickers, Posters, etc.: $160
LLC-$165
Bi-Monthly Costs:
Printing- Toner, Paper, Supplies, Labor: $300
Commissioned Art: $100
Yearly Costs:
Website Fees: $50
Tax Service: $75
Totalled, our current cost projection is $1550. As you can see, we have a 3-way split between getting everything ready for the first issue, printing the first issue and then creating a stable foundation for Crucify Thyself and Die His Death Publications. If the majority of this money is not raised, the entire project cannot begin production.
