Oskar's Wish

Donation protected
Oskar and his younger sister, Ange, are young Rwandan refugees, who were forced to flee their home country due to political oppression and threats made on Oskar’s life, and now have struggled to survive in Cape Town, South Africa. Oskar and Ange were introduced to one of my colleagues, Rachel John-West, while on a social work practicum in Cape Town. During her months spent in South Africa they were able to develop a friendship that has since endured, long after her return.

In 2016 we were able to raise 9 500 CAN$ which has put Oskar through his first 3 years of a Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences at Damelin College and Ange through a small health aid course. Ange would like to do her degree in nursing which she now has the prerequisites for but is waiting to get into the program. Once Oskar is done his degree next year he will join the workforce and be able to improve their quality of life while his sister goes through school.

As asylum seekers, unable to receive support or any form of government assistance, Oskar and Ange’s only means of income is Oskar working as a delivery driver. Because of your support Oskar was able to save money to first buy a simple motorcycle and find work outside of being a watch for parked cars and then to upgrade to a vehicle which is much safer to do deliveries in. Though this job is better, Oskar’s earnings still often barely suffice to provide food and shelter for him and his sister. Both have endured much suffering while trying to work towards their futures. Ange especially has overcome extreme and very traumatic past abuse. Yet even in the face of such hardships and seemingly endless obstacles, Oskar and Ange have not lost faith. Their hope for the future has not diminished. With his meager earnings Oskar has and continues to clothe, feed and shelter both himself and his sister and he has also managed to put Ange and younger siblings in Rwanda through grade school.

We are inviting you to participate in this fundraiser to assist both Oskar and Ange. Our goal is to help pay for both of their educations in order to ease this heavy financial burden they have been forced to carry.

Please mark your calendars and join us July 20, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church in Edmonton, Alberta at 6pm. There will be food, music, and a silent auction. If you are unable to attend, please consider donating to our gofundme.
