Hi,
My name is Steven and I am a comedian.
CROWD: "Hi Steven!"
I've been a professional paid comedian since 1981, starting out as one of the house emcee's at the world famous Comedy Store in Hollywood . I've been an actor, a writer, a producer, a director and voice-over artist.
Most of my successes were in the UK, where I moved in the early 90's. I was on television over there 3 times, including from a big production I created and produced for a drug and alcohol charity launched by Princess Diana. High On Laughter ran for 3 years and included such comedy luminaries as Zach Galifiniakis, Jim Gaffigan, Paul Provenza, Rick Overton, George Wendt, Jerry Lewis, Johnny Vegas, Mark Thomas and Bobcat Goldthwait.
The 3rd HOL took place on September 8,2002 at the greatest theater in the world: The London Palladium . Where the Beatles played for the Queen, where Judy Garland, Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy and Martin and Lewis performed. Some of that show was broadcast on Bravo UK.
CUT TO NOW:
I am homeless. By "homeless" I mean I couch surf, I stay in hostels, I stay with friends, sometimes cheap hotels. I haven't had a permanent home in 5 years, since I lost the only property I ever owned, which was in London.
I'm now back living in Los Angeles and trying to straighten out my financial life. I no longer own a car, which makes it rough, but I do take the bus and walk, sometimes Uber. My biggest personal problem right now is a permanent place to live. A place to hang my hat.
The last two years, I've been making a modest living writing and editing for other people. I help a young stand-up wanna-be with his act. He pays me $50 a session. I rewrote some changes in a Nazi film for an independant producer. I'm ghost writing a book for someone else. And two weeks ago, I sold Cosby jokes to Roseanne Barr. I even sell titles to books and screenplays. It's fun, I enjoy it, but right now, it's just not enough for me to get a leg up and get my own place again. Don't get me wrong; I'm paid well, but the money I get only covers "food, phone and coffee/wifi".
What I'm asking you is to help me. Help me get enough money to get myself into a modest apartment in Los Angeles. Last night I was "homeless" again; no place to sleep. I spent all night walking from coffee house to 24 hour diner. I really need my own place once and for all. I can't keep bothering people by invading their homes anymore.
In order for me to accomplish this, I need to have first month's and last month's rent, plus a little for utilities and furniture. I figure I can find a single for between $750 and $900.
In return for helping me, I offer my writing and comedy services to you. Whether you need a new bio, or how about that eBook idea you've always wanted to write, or even a sitcom idea. I am connected too and who knows in this crazy world.
I know I'm asking a lot from people who don't really know me. But, you know I appreciate it so very much. In 2010 I started and run something called The Laughter Foundation . A 501(c)3 in the making that is there to help comedians in financial straights. We already saved a single mom comedian and her son from imminent eviction. We also want to build a world-class museum to study and exhibit the art, history and science of comedy. The Comedy Museum . (Ironically, even though I started The Laughter Foundation, I cannot personally benefit from it, even though I am a comedian myself. I do receive approximately 2.5% of every dollar raised as salary, but we're talking small change these days. Plus, we're not active right now anyway in terms of campaigns.)
Help me get off the streets and in return you'll have my eternal gratitude, maybe some writing and/or editing, maybe a private comedy gig for your company, but certainly the knowledge that you helped a formerly broken man get back on his own two feet. Then maybe after that's done, I'll be able to work harder on writing contracts and finally purchase a car again so I can get to comedy road gigs and that all important day job.
Ah, perchance to dream....
Thank you sincerely from my heart.
Steven Alan Green
NOTE: This campaign does not include standarized "perks" or rewards for donations. However, when you donate, please tell me what you need and I'll see if I can abide. The perks I'm offering are writing and editing of eBooks, screenplays, sitcom ideas, bio's, website content, or anything you can think of writing wise, AND if the conditions are workable, I'll do a custom made comedy set for your company Christmas party or whatever. I also do voice-overs .
My stand-up and acting showreel, where I hosted "The South Park Weekend" on Comedy Central UK.
