Jessica's Medical Mission Trip

Donation protected
To my dearest friends and family:

As most of you know, I started medical school this past fall at Virginia Commonwealth University/ Medical College of Virginia. The first semester was definitely an adjustment to a whole new level of academic rigor and expectations. But at the same time, the past five months have been the most rewarding and memorable times of my life.  I have found a family in my peers, inspirational mentors, and a deep passion for medicine. I am truly lucky to have the priviledge of pursuing this passion.
One of the groups I joined since starting medical school is called HOMBRE, which stands for Honduras Outreach Medical Brigada Relief Effort. It is a group of medical and pharmacy students who organize and run a week-long medical mission trip to rural Hondruas every summer in order to assist in the care of local communities that do not have adequate healthcare. Students who have gone in the past have said that the experience was invalubale and that they were reminded of their original reasons for going into medicine in the first place- to help others. I, along with 10 other VCU health professions students, will be joining physicians and other healthcare providers this summer in Pinares, Honduras to help provide medical care to those who need it most. I am honored to have been chosen for this opportunity, and I look forward to pursuing my passion in a region of the world that may not have the resources that I grew up with.
As a group, however, we have a few hurdles to overcome before we are ready to leave. We are responsible for raising all of the money and pharmaceuticals that we need for our trip. This is a somewhat daunting task, as we will need to purchase the majority of the medicine that we will be bringing to Pinares. Last year, the HOMRE team provided free medical care and health education to almost 8,000 patients from the poorest regions of Honduras. This year, we will return to the established sites in Honduras and hope to reach the same population that would otherwise not receive basic medical care.
That said, I am writing to ask for your support of our mission. As future doctors, we all want to be able to help as much as we can, and to do this properly, we are trying to raise as much money as possible. If there is anything you are able to donate to help us to reach our goal of providing the best and most complete care possible, I would be honored and greatly appreciative.
In addition, HOMBRE is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, so any donation also counts as a tax break! If you need this form with your donation, please feel free to ask me for one. Anything you are able to give will go directly towards someone in Honduras receiving basic medical care that they so require and deserve.
I would like to thank you all so much for your monetary support. But more importantly, I would like to thank each and every one of you that have been with me through my journey. I would not be where I am today without the love and support of all of my family and friends. I owe it all to you.
If you have any questions for me or would like to talk about global healthcare, please feel free to contact me through email or phone number. Also, feel free to browse through our brochure and website at http://www.hombremedicine.org.
