HENDERSON ISLAND BEACH CLEAN-UP
- Trans Pacific Expedition Against Plastic -
OUR MISSION
Henderson Island’s beaches are drowning in a sea of plastic. If you’ve seen the pictures, you can see it becoming covered in more and more oceanic plastic which is washing ashore every day. We aim to change that in a direct and practical way by sailing to the Pitcairn Group, in our sturdy 12m steel center console sloop " Armageddon Ready ". with a Plastics to Fuel Machine of our own construction. Go ashore at Henderson Island to conduct a clean up using the machine to convert as much plastic back into Diesel as possible.
We would use a small amount of this to re fuel our vessel but the majority will be gifted to the Pitcairn Islanders, who still rely on diesel fuel as their primary source of energy. In addition to this we will impliment a program of education and construction of a Plastics to Fuel Machine for the Pitcairn islanders themselves, so that they can continue the clean up process themselves as well as gaining a degree of energy freedom at the same time.

HOW, THOUGH?
All plastic is made of oil, and therefore, all plastic should be able to be made back into oil, right? Well we are constructing our own Plastics to Fuel Machine (PTF), to covert mixed plastics back initially into mineral oil then further distill it into fuel, specifically Diesel, via a process called PYROLYSIS.
By constructing our machine from readily available materials such as old gas cylinders and household copper tubing, with basic metalworking tools which we will carry on board. We will be able to not only show people the machine and the benefits it provides. We will be able to educate, and from on location materials construct a machine to be used and copied.
Although this process does indeed create greenhouse gases as we are ultimately burning hydrocarbons in return for energy, our premise rests on a three fold platform.
Firstly that plastics and in particular single use plastics are going to end up in the environment if waste plastic is viewed as a cheap or even free source of energy then it is no longer waste.
Second, that if communities reliant on Diesel generators for their energy reduce or even remove their need to import fuels then not only have we cut demand for world oil directly but additionally have saved the fuel that would have been expended transporting the fuel.
Finally, that Carbon Dioxide the major greenhouse gas currently effecting climate change can in fact be significantly reduced by realistic and widespread changes in agricultural practices. In particular the application of Hemp in all its forms to act as annual global Carbon sink.
WHY HENDERSON ISLAND?
Henderson Island is the second most remote island in the world and was the first in the Pacific to attain world heritage status. Like many remote islands it is home to many unique species, all of whom have been impacted by contact with humans. The announcement by Dr Lavers from the University of Tasmania that this remote island in the South Pacific is likely to be the most plastic polluted island in the world illustrated that sadly like many islands supporting seabird rookeries the Henderson Petrel whose only breeding site is the island after which they are named are suffering catastrophic losses due to the ingestion of oceanic plastics.
By sailing to this remote location to convert waste plastics into fuel for the locals energy requirements we will demonstrate that, if it can be done there, it can be done everywhere!
