Freshman Scholarship Campaign

When I was only 15 years old, my family’s world was shattered when my mother lost her battle to cancer. Little did I know that this day was only the beginning of our loss. The two youngest were still in high school, one was graduating from college and the other had just started a new family. I remember my emotional hardships from her absence as I continued  through my high school years. Some days, I could barely get out of bed let alone think about what my future may hold. With encouragement from some important people in my life, I decided to go to college. Ensuing the loss of parents at such a young age, this opportunity was a blessing and kept me on a straight path. However, a great deal of financial burden was left upon my shoulders.

Recently, Lead Pastor Lyndol Loyd at LakeRidge United Methodist Church gave the sermon, “Parable of Investment”. This story was about a man that gives his three servants gold for them to invest while he goes on a trip. Each servant received a certain amount of gold to invest based upon his abilities. After Pastor Loyd finished his sermon, he challenged his congregation to reach into our own pockets and invest some money while echoing the words, “To those that use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have abundance.” At this moment, I had no idea what I was going to do. I thought, “How can I use my own experiences and hardships to help others?” I quickly found myself thinking back to when I first began college. I thought about how easily it would have been to detour from my intended path and how easy it is for those in the same situation today.

With this all being said, I am investing $10. With your help, I hope to have enough funds to provide an incoming freshman with a $2500 scholarship to help alleviate some of those financial hardships that I had when I was 18 years old. Although this may not be met in the 40 day deadline given by Pastor Loyd, I believe that we can put a huge dent in this goal! If you are interested in donating money to help a future student at Texas Tech University, that has lost a parent just like me, stay on the right path and alleviate some financial burden, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/ParableInvestment. This scholarship will go directly to the student's tuition and help achieve his/her ultimate goal. Although we can never fill the void of a lost parent, I believe that this will be a positive impact on the student's life.
