Parsha Storybook Project

Donation protected
At the beginning of this year I set the goal to read my son Joss a storybook each week that corresponded to that week's Torah portion. As a Jewish educator and as a mom I wanted him to begin to build a foundation for lifelong Torah learning. I thought it was important that he knew the characters, the stories and the ideas that serve as the grounding for all Jewish life and tradition.

As I began this task I started to realize the magnitude of what I had taken on. No list of storybooks by parsha existed and I would have to make my own. Through the help of my online networks such as JEDLAB and the amazing resource of the Media Center at The Davis Academy where I work, I began to populate a spreadsheet of storybooks.  I fell down many rabbit holes of publishing houses and creative amazon searching to uncover hidden jewels.

As the book of Bereshit comes to a close the spreadsheet includes over 100 titles just telling the stories of this first book of Torah. My son now knows that every night Mommy is going to read a Torah story. He asks what we are reading next and is excited to learn. As the weeks passed, my passion for this project only grows. I have began to let myself dream of the potential that this project holds.

I would love to continue to do this work and to create these resources, not just for myself, but for all of those out there doing Jewish Education. The Torah, sometimes, is a hard book to make relevant and exciting to kids, but I think storybooks are a great place to start. I would love to deepen this project by creating a website with books sorted by parsha including reviews and recommendations. I would love to build a platform to share lesson plans using these books and resources for our communities.

In order to do this, I need your help. I make good use of my school's library and of my public library system, but even with this, my Amazon cart is full of books that I would love to get my hands on to include in the lists. Buying books takes money. Creating new resources that benefit all of us, takes money. I am hoping you can help me out by donating some money to my project and to fund me in creating this resource for all of us to share. Thank you so much for your support.
