The SNAP Matching Fund Program
Donation protected
My name is Reber Cribb, and I am the Operation's Manager at the Harrisonburg Farmer's Market . Part of our philosophy at the market is to provide low income families with ways in which they can purchase healthy foods.
If you are not familiar with SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), it is a federal income based nutrition assistance program. Families receive funds and the funds are needs based, which means that they are determined by the income and resources of the family.
At the market, we have been matching the SNAP fund as a service to our SNAP customers. When a SNAP customer withdraws money at the market for goods, we match the withdrawal amount up to $10.00. In other words, if a SNAP customer withdraws 10 bucks, they get 20 bucks in "market money" to spend as they see fit.
There are several advantages to this. First of all, it enables low income families to be able to afford fresh, local, and healthy food for their families. Second of all, it enables parents in low income families a way to establish healthy eating habits with their children. Last but not least, the surrounding community benefits because healthy eating habits lead to lower health care costs.
In the past, we have relied on donations to be able to provide a matching service to SNAP customers. Unfortunately, our fund is running out. We want to be able to continue this service so we have decided to reach out into cyberspace in order to get some help.
The ability to eat fresh, local, and healthy food is a privilege that some people take for granted. Our SNAP customers are constantly expressing their gratitude for the fact that we are able to help them provide healthy food for their families. At the market, we feel like it's important to be good stewards for our fellow humans, and we are running out of resources to do that. Please help us to achieve our goal of providing nutrition for families in our area. Thank you for your time.
