Send Philo to Worlds

The Philomathean Society is the second oldest high school debate club in the United States. But throughout this long history, it is easy to lose sight of what makes debate so special: the passionate discourse between two sides of a complex issue. In a debate, both teams come to the table bringing different experiences, ideas and logical structures. These factors enable both teams to challenge each other to think in different ways, and therefore broaden their intellectual horizons.

That's why many of our debaters dream of going to the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (http://www.widpsc.org/) to compete at the highest level on the global stage. Every year, a handful of American debaters get this opportunity to go to the competition by winning one of the nine qualifying tournaments.

This year, I, Akhil, a senior and VP of the Philomathean Society, was lucky enough to fulfill this dream of qualifying for the world championships in Sydney, Australia. Unfortunately, however, our school was unable to provide any support for this or any future trip  for a future debater to the competition. We are hoping to set up this GoFundMe to raise funds for our debaters who qualify to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to attend the most prestigious and educational tournament for high school parliamentary debate.
