Physical Therapy in a Humanitarian Aid Setting
Donation protected
Hello all!
For the past few years I have been deeply involved in work to help refugees through various mediums in the UK. Now I would like to provide some of my skills directly to refugees in Lesvos, Greece. My plan is to work directly with Medical Volunteers International and One Happy Family Medical Clinic.
As a physical therapist, I believe that these skills are a necessity for all. Physical therapy has a great applicability in a refugee-care setting; if a refugee does not have full-use of their body, they will not have the ability to work, further travel or to provide for their families. Through various techniques, it is possible to restore functional use of their bodies, providing them with the capacity for all of these things and more.
I will be in Lesbos from the 29/04 - 29/07, I have chosen this amount of time because it is of sufficient duration to provide professional care from start to finish (injury - wellness). Your donations will be used to help subsidise my costs as a volunteer whilst being out there; helping me to help those I meet. This will include travel, rent, living expenses, and of course, small items such as fruits or sweets that I can give to some refugees I meet, small things that will bring a smile.
I am hoping to be joined by two other therapists, Angelika and Francesco, for a short duration over the summer. Not only will their support be invaluable, it will provide an opportunity for group learning together. Our aim will be to create a pathway specifically to help more physical therapists receive the education and training necessary to work within a humanitarian setting.
Thank you in advance for supporting us with your donations. If you have other means of supporting, please don't hesitate to contact me.
