Elementary School Art Supplies

In September of this year, my son started Kindergarten at Pinewoods Elementary in Estero, Florida and I began volunteering an hour each week in the art department during a kindergarten class.
For the past several weeks I have watched the school's art teacher handle all kinds of challenges with grace and ease. Whether its bathroom breaks needed in the middle of class (her art room doesn't have a bathroom, she can’t leave her children alone and sometimes yes, there are accidents), a child crying for no apparent reason, or a lot of silliness after a long holiday break, this Pinewoods Elementary art teacher goes above and beyond for her students each and every day. She plays music, shares stories, and teaches over 1,080+ students without any help but for maybe an occasional volunteer like me who is lucky enough to witness this symphony of creativity and education. Each class is only 35 minutes long and she often has 25-35 kids at a time.
She recently bought a drying rack from her budget for $300. It is cheaply made and completely worthless for her purpose. She showed it to me, expressing her disappointment. It got me thinking about all of the supplies – the crayons, the pencils, pens, glue, pastels, markers and glitter that make each art class uniquely special. Without them, there is no creativity and without creativity, there is no spirit, passion or growth in these young minds. The PTO at the school said that they have never been asked for anything from the art department.
Please help me fund the Pinewoods Elementary Art Department with fresh new supplies this year. The PTO has agreed to help but we need to get started. We would love to surprise the art teacher ahead of the holidays with a nice donation! Just a few dollars goes a LONG way, and if you ever have a chance to volunteer at a school even if just once in your life, take it. You cannot even begin to appreciate the time, energy and pure love it takes to teach a child until you witness the magic yourself!
