Piney Knob Trail Matching Gift Fund
Tax deductible
Our Offline Donors have helped raise an additional $1850 for this project:
Heritage Partners: $350
Dr. Susan Wynne, DDS: $500
Reed Caldwell & Kathleen Nolte: $1,000
The Piney Knob Trail System has received a $10,000 matching gift from the Cherokee County Tourism Development Authority—so, your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the TDA. This is an all or nothing match grant—so we have two months to raise the entire $10,000 match. These funds will be used to finalize the trail system, help promote access, and get the trails opened to the public. We ask that you make a tax-deductible donation to Heritage Partners, the trail’s fiscal agent, to help us finalize this exciting project.
About The Trail
The town of Murphy, North Carolina is in the process of constructing approximately 6 miles of recreational hiking and mountain biking trails on the 700+ acre Murphy Watershed property off of Piney Knob Road—creating the Piney Knob Biking and Hiking Trail System. This project is the first phase of a 22.3-mile trail system that will be constructed over the next ten years. This property is easily accessible by all county residents and tourists. Also, in the future, this trail could be connected to other existing trails (USFS Roads) and the Murphy River Walk—creating the beginnings of a unified Murphy Trail System. This type of overarching trail system will help establish Murphy, NC as a cycling and hiking destination and magnify the economic benefits of mountain biking and outdoor recreation.
We have also been working diligently to curtail illicit access to the watershed. We have constructed chokes, built earthen barriers, installed new gates, built pedestrian only bridges, narrowed existing trails, and much more. We have also been able to correct many erosion problems, stop streambed access, and halt deterioration of river banks. We have replanted stream banks with indigenous plants and corrected runoff and sediment issues.
Your gift helps further these initiatives and finalize the first section of this beautiful trail system. We thank you in advance for your support!
We have already received several generous offline donations!
