Plastic Awareness Beach Hike

Donation protected
About this projectWitness with me; as I hike, Live Stream, and Vlog nearly 400 miles across the Eastern shorelines of Florida to expose a symptom that threatens an entire ecosystem. Providing temporary relief while discussing simple choices that will cure a frivolously infected organism we all need; Earth.

Mission:

To document, educate, and promote a better understanding for the impact created by everyday single use plastics. Trek starts in Fernandina Beach, Fl and ends in Miami Beach, Fl. Along the hike I will be picking up all materials not made by nature O.P.D. (Oceanic Plastic Discharges) and other wind/leeward marine debris in about 20 days. The broadcasts will be made suitable for all ages.

Twenty miles a day is the speed we will have to maintain to make the hike within twenty days. Leaving Fernandina Beach, Florida on April 24th at 6:30 AM where my first live video will be broadcast around 7:30AM. I will continue to broadcast a minimum of 2 live videos/day (One in the morning one at night). In addition, I will Vlog and keep an updated blog of my travels so that you may follow me on my journey. I will have a truck at several checkpoints along the way to put the collected OPD (Oceanic Plastic Discharges). Our goal is to arrive in South Beach Miami during Mother's Day weekend with a better understanding of plastic pollution.

"The assembly asks the public to recognize the environmental impact of our plastic use. As much as 20 million tons of plastic enters into the ocean every year. Plastic cannot decompose, so once it enters the water it breaks into smaller pieces and causes significant damage to life in the ocean."  - http://www.borgenmagazine.com/un-warns-plastic-waste-ocean/

I invite especially schools, families, and skeptics to take this journey with me by visiting PlasticSymptoms.org as I trek across Florida's eastern Shoreline. We will observe the southeast coast together and talk about solutions, meet locals, and spread awareness of a symptom that I have watched develop over my own lifetime, at an alarming pace. Support this small step toward awareness and help become a part of the solution together. This is just a short term "step" toward a much bigger "long term" project that aims to dramatically reduce plastic consumption, and you all get to be a part of it. This is all about developing a central understanding for the problem and respect of the Oceans. We have a long way to go, you all will get first dibs at the solution.

In case you were wondering... Yes, I do like long walks on the beach.

How will your funds support our journey?
We will be using burlap bags to collect the plastic, less plastic is the "theme". In fact, several burlaps incase some Florida beach goers decide to aid in scratching a small "itch" that is a symptom of a much more severe and chronic issue. Fuel for transporting the O.P.D. (Oceanic Plastic Discharge), Truck Space which includes possibly renting a truck or trailer. Webserver hosting, video camera hardware (Need 4 new cameras), Live Stream hosting, dependable remote internet access, food, water, and Sun protection.

How can you support this journey further? Send in your own plastic encounters and share your limited choices that make it difficult to live a plastic free world. Go to PlasticSymptoms.org or email them directly to [email redacted] and share the symptoms you see of this plastic epidemic. You can also post to your own social media with #plasticsymptoms. Try to pay close attention to labels and packaging. You may find that most foods that are good for you and consciously harvested may also be consciously packaged.

"So next time you go to buy something, think. Is it biodegradable or not?" "Every year thousands and thousands of animals die from the plastic we throw away" - Bill Nye in (Pollution Solution) https://vimeo.com/112401583

"We are finding a disturbing amount of plastic and styrofoam debris that is partially eaten by sea turtles, fish, birds, sharks and crustaceans. Animals are consuming our trash." - https://balloonsblow.org/flotsam-jetsam/

If you are a local to Florida's Eastern shorelines I invite you to help provide temporary relief to our shorelines as I pass your local beach. NO plastic bags PLEASE! I will have plenty of extra burlap bags if you'd like to walk alongside me. Do not add to the problem by bringing with you any single use plastic, PLEASE. This broadcast is about bringing the world to the attention of a symptom whose cure is simple. "...but, you don't have to take my word for it." - LeVar Burton (Reading Rainbow)

There is a long term goal and solution. This is just the beginning.  Responsibility can be fun, rewarding, and attractive. Witness our changing world.

Every wave starts as a ripple. Together, we make waves.

This introductory Journal is just a tip of the ice-berg. It is going to take a lot more support than our goal of $1000.

Welcome aboard!
