Playland-Not-at-the-Beach is a building chock-full of amazing things to see and do. There are 30+ pinball machines set on Free Play, arcade games, videogames, carnival games of skills where you can win prizes, penny arcades full of antique amusement devices, live magic shows, an amazing hand-carved miniature circus, side show acts, miniature dioramas, Fascination games, and historic exhibits with artifacts from the Sutro Baths and Whitney's Playland at the Beach in San Francisco.
Playland-Not-at-the-Beach is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Museum of Fun. Designed and built entirely by volunteers. The 20+ interactive exhibits celebrate the magic and history of America's bygone amusements. Our goal is to educate newer generations about the bygone days and allow those who remember Whitney's Playland and the Sutro Baths the opportunity to recapture the glorious sights and sounds of that marvelous era and to be a repository of memorabelia from there.
The bad news is the building we are in has been sold and the new landlord plans to construct a new multi-story building on this site. This is both good and bad news as it will take a few years for plans and permits to be processed. The good news is the new landlords are familiar with Playland Not at the Beach, our history and our following. They have graciously offered us below market rent and a possibility to stay in the space until construction begins (and give us time to find a new location and/or relocate most of our collection.
The other bad news is we cannot currently afford the new rent. The other good news is that we have a wonderful network of fans, friends, volunteers, and community members who remember the old Playland at the Beach. They all want us to succeed in this endevour and we hope you do too. If you are able to help out with a donation it would be greatly appreciated. If you are not able to help with a donation but would like to help us out please spread the word about our effort to keep this part of San Francisco Bay Area history alive & well.
Please help us keep Playland-Not-at-the-Beach going and help preserve a historic part of the Bay Area's family entertainment history.
Remember that we don't stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing!
