Officer John Zook, a 27 year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, suffered smoke inhalation when his house burned to the ground. After the fire ignited, John desperately searched for his dog Crazy. When the smoke and heat became too much, he ran out of the house for fresh air. Two deep breaths later, John re-entered his home to save his 15 year old dog. Neighbors noticed the flames and called 911. The Chicago Fire Department responded and made entry to the fully engulfed residence. Firefighters found John on the floor, coughing and gasping for air. After the firefighters carried John to safety, he told them his dog was still inside. Without hesitation, firefighters re-entered the burning building and discovered John's dog in the living room and carried her out of harm's way. Paramedics treated both John and his dog for their injuries on the front lawn. John was rushed to the emergency room where his condition was upgraded from critical to serious condition after doctors treated him and is getting stronger by the minute. Crazy is resting comfortably at a neighbor's house and she is expected to make a full recovery. The Zook family suffered a total loss and John's 14th District family is asking for your help.
