Pocket Park for Warrendale
Donation protected
Almost 4 years ago my husband Joe and I started the In Memory of Community Garden to help the Warrendale Community (located at Minock and Whitlock),bringing neighbors of all cultures and ages together. The garden currently has 40 raised beds, a butterfly garden in the shape of a butterfly, compost tumblers , rain barrels, community information center and ,little library . We have had GREAT support from State Reps, Detroit City Council, District Managers , The Detroit Police Dept, , The Warrendale Community Organization along with many Organizations in the City of Detroit. Lawrence Technological University is also assisting with the design. We added a Solar greenhouse in Nov.2018 and we continue to work on the landscaping.
In Jan of 2017 we won the Project Evergreen Contest where we have received the renovation of a safe green space for children and families but this does not include any play equipment. We won a grant from KaBoom offering part of the cost of the playscape but we have to come up with $25000.00 in order to receive a $15000.00 credit. We have already personally purchased the lots but are in need of help to raise the additional funds. Adding a pocket park to our community space is much needed with the closest park from the garden being about a mile away. Even though the garden welcomes the youth , we all know children get bored very easily. The pocket park will allow parents, grandparents to still volunteer at the garden and keep an eye on the children across the street. With so many abandoned houses/lots in the Warrendale area and nowhere for the children to play we have seen many children throughout the years playing in and around these abandoned houses. #helpthechildren #warrendale #inmemoryofcommunitygarden #children #community #park #pocketpark #detroit #gofundme #neighborhood #warrendalecommunityorganization #kids #playground #play #safety #blockclubs #district7 #dist7
