Mental health volunteer Sri Lanka

Donation protected
I have always had a passion for volunteering and giving back to my community. I have offered my help in schools, to others, and with the Samaritans as a fully qualified listening volunteer. With your help, I would love to expand my volunteering to the other side of the world - in Sri Lanka. I am a first year psychology student at The University of Leeds, my interest in mental health and its importance has led me to take on (and be accepted for) a placement in July 2018 for five weeks with SLV.Global, who offer intense volunteering positions to psychology students abroad.

The work is not easy, its challenging - simply put, it is not for the faint hearted. The placement includes special needs work, daily session planning, mental health care, helping with childrens development, holding workshops (for example helping people to cope with the impact of the 2004 tsunami) and teaching English to people  who will travel for miles for a session. All voluntarily!

With few psychologists, the primary method of treatment for those with mental health issues is pharmacological. Beds in psychiatric hospitals are scarce and there is a great defecit of formally qualified mental health professionals.
The lack of sufficient mental health care has a personal importance to me, I am a recovering anorexic and have suffered with anxiety and depression. I was lucky to recieve the best support through the NHS for my conditions, others in Sri Lanka are not so lucky. Traveling to Sri Lanka will help to broaden my understanding of psychology and give me skills that I will take back to the U.K.

I can help improve the mental health in Sri Lanka, but  I need your support to help me get there. SLV.Global cannot cover the cost of anything, not the homestay accomodation, the cost of meals, transport, travel insurance, flights, or visas. Your contribution can help make a massive difference and help me to get to Sri Lanka to help make the difference the Island needs in regards to the mental health care there.
Every penny will make a difference, every pound will take me one step closer to getting there.
I am so grateful that you took the time to read my story.
Please donate what you can, and please help me share this amazing cause.
