Hello friends and family and greetings from Alaska.
I'm heading to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia July 24 to 28 as one of two elected party leader delegates from Alaska. I'm feeling the Bern and asking you to help support my participation in this important political process. I'm hoping to raise $3,000 to cover the cost of attending the convention, including airfare and accommodations.
In 2008, I attended President Obama's first inauguration ceremony, arriving at 4 a.m. and walking around the Washington mall for six hours in 9º temps. I was thrilled to be taking part in the "yes we can" movement alongside 2 million similarly-inspired Americans. This year, I am energized by and excited about Bernie Sander's message of progressive, citizen-based revolution.
I think that Bernie's “huge” ideals and ideas are worthy of America and I am attending the convention to help promote this progressive agenda. I believe we must implement important changes that will make us a more tolerant, equal-opportunity culture, society and nation, and a better America overall.
Below is an overview of my political philosophy and a list of some of the key platform items I support.
Political Engagement Philosophy
I believe that all citizens should engage in the political process in some way. Only through large scale participation can we truly realize a democratic society. At this point in my life, I am eager to engage in a substantial way, which is why I am District Chair and a State Delegate, a platform committee member and am excited to participate as a National Delegate.
National Convention Goals
I strongly support advancing a progressive policy agenda. I will have the opportunity to raise my voice for our democratic ideals in support of a more progressive platform in Philadelphia, and I will indeed do so, with conviction and confidence.
Key Platform Issues
> Overturn Citizens United to help get big money out of politics
> Retire the super delegate system
> Enact effective climate change policies, including climate adaptation plans for areas under imminent threat such as coastal communities.
> Support for more wilderness and wild habitat protection
> Oppose social injustice and particularly in our justice system
> Work to equalize economic opportunity
> Improve access to voting for all
> Rein in the too-powerful banks and corporations
> Provide Medicare for all
> Equal pay for equal work for all people
> Pursue science/fact-based policies that also include local/traditional-based knowledge and particularly for subsistence-based issues and cultures
> Expand our system of public education, for there is no better investment that we can make in all our citizens lives than offering a better education and by making life-long learning a cultural trait of all Americans
> Fair rather than just free trade world-wide
> Demand that other countries make more proportional investments in word peace - this is the only way that peace will prosper.
> Redraw gerrymandered congressional districts
> Advocate for and incentivize renewable energy systems
> Support more affordable post-secondary education
> Advocate for term limits for senators and congressmen/women in order to refocus our representative’s jobs away from building power bases and getting re-elected to performing the people's work. This will improve performance and reduce fraud, and I think it will attract an entirely new and overall higher quality of citizen legislators.
> Support the development and implementation of a national infrastructure repair and enhancement program that will help improve our fundamental systems of transportation, communication and energy generation & distribution.
> Raise the minimum wage level to $15/hr, with exceptions for part time youth employment.
> Revamp the federal tax code, from the ground up, to make taxes simpler to prepare and more equitable, including implementation of a Fairtax system.
> Universal pre-school, with funding from states and federal sources, to encourage the adoption of learning skills during the critical early stages of children’s lives.
> Support online education by non-profits, like what’s offered at snhu.edu, because these represent flexible learning environment that are hugely successful and allows people at all stages of their lives and careers to more easily continue their education and update their knowledge and skills. Life-long learning should be our shared cultural mantra!.
> End the mass incarceration of people for minor drug offenses. Further, decriminalize drug abuse and addiction and treat these challenges as the medical not criminal issues.
> Require two years “service to your country” for every 18-20 year old. Service could be military, Coast Guard, National Park Service, Forest Service, Peace Corps, Postal Service, Health & Human Service, EPA, Border Patrol, VISTA, etc.
> Fix the Veteran’s Health System so that it is so efficient, medically advanced and patient friendly, and inclusive of real and extensive mental health services, without punitive consequences, for our military and their families.
> Support second amendment rights and responsibilities including required background checks for all gun sales and allow the CDC to collect and analyze data on gun related violence so that we can begin making choices and decisions based upon data.
