Project Sumatra is a non-profit voluntary organisation making a non biased documentary about the Sumatran orangutan and eco-system. We will focusing on issues such as deforestation, palm oil, the bush meat trade, the illegal pet trade and bush fires.
We hope to highlight, with this documentary, the issue facing orangutans in their natural habitat. We want to show the amazing work individuals and groups are doing to protect them, but we also want to show the driving forces behind many of the issues. Coming from a privileged position it is easy to say something is wrong, but living in a poverty stricken country the same decisions we deem as wrong might look different under these circumstances.
Orangutans were chosen as the focal species for Project Sumatra as they are already well loved charismatic animals. Also the declining orangutan population is an indicator of the environmental destruction happening in Sumatra. These incredible animals are at the forefront of our documentary, as they are so relatable and we personally see a lot of ourselves in them. Though they are by no means the only species we will be looking at. The project will look at the ecosystem as a whole including the communities dependant on this natural balance.
Interviews with hunters, palm oil farmers as well as conservation groups, primatologists and volunteers will give a balanced view of living next-door to the orangutan. This documentary is hoping to show the reality behind conservation and what it truly takes to protect animals, the environment and humans.
The funding will cover travel, living cost, fair payment of local guides, national park fees and editorial work. Accommodation and equipment is already arranged. This is a non-profit venture and all money raised will go towards supporting the project.
The final documentary will be completely free and open for anyone to view, use, share and pass on. We believe that the messages within the documentary need to reach as wide an audience as they can, and feel strongly about making an educational tool that could help the organisations who are tirelessly working towards change.
