MY PROM TO END POVERTY

PROJECT PROM
Everybody knows just how expensive senior year can be. Prom in itself can cost hundreds of dollars, just for one night. Hair, makeup, dresses and limos are only a few examples of where our money goes to. But how significant are all of these things? Can you imagine the impact we could be making if we used that money to improve the living conditions of those in our city? Recently, I have come to be more aware of the ridiculous sum one spends in their grad year. There is so much we take for granted, all while poverty is a prominent issue in our own home of Vancouver. It is a social injustice comparing our privileges to the struggles faced by others. I refuse to spend so much money on one night when there are people out there who don’t even have basic necessities. If you feel as strongly on this as I do, please consider joining me in this endeavor. I have set up an account where I will allocate all of the extra money I would have spent on my graduation to UGM. UGM, or United Gospel Mission, is an amazing organization that reaches out to the community in East Vancouver. They run programs that help recovering addicts integrate back into society by providing aid and mentorship towards getting a job. My gofundme page will allow you to do the same, and you can make sure that your money is going to the right place. There are many ways we can reach our goal, whether it is borrowing a dress or a tux from a friend or getting it second hand. Making a huge impact can come from something as little as watching what you spend your money on.
What we do now, matters.
