Protect KCPD's Police Dogs
Donation protected
The opioid epidemic is currently the largest public health crisis in the United States, and now there are new victims: police dogs. They are being exposed to dangerous opioids while conducting drug searches, some have even overdosed due to the exposure. This risk is even greater now that fentanyl is being mixed with heroin and can be inhaled by police dogs and officers during searches. Right here in Kansas City, 1.5 million lethal doses of fentanyl were seized at a bus station just a few weeks ago.
Narcan is a drug currently used to reverse the effects of opioids for people, and it also works on dogs. It can be used immediately after exposure to lessen the effects until the dog can receive emergency veterinary care.
With the funds donated, the KCMO Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association will purchase Narcan kits for the Kansas City Police Department's Canine and Drug Enforcement Units so officers and their K-9 partners are protected.
The Kansas City, Missouri Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (KCMO CPAAA) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting the Kansas City (Missouri) Police Department and its community policing programs.
