Many of us in the U.S. take for granted clean & safe drinking water. It is a desperately worrying statistic that nearly one billion people in the world lack clean, healthy drinking water. Residents in the US can turn on a tap and access safe drinking water whenever they like, but the situation is very different for the less fortunate people without access to clean water. For example, there are a number of reasons why poverty has become an epidemic . But one of the greatest causes of poverty is also the most overlooked - the lack of access to clean drinking water. Nearly one billion people do not have access to clean, safe water - that's the equivalent of 1 in 8 people on the planet!
In order to eliminate suspended harmful contaminants and biological agents, water must be purified before consumption. Any acceptable water treatment option must provide for potable water quality that is delivered to US EPA standard to be considered safe drinking water.
Additionally, the solution must also meet the following criteria in order for it to be used:
- Low cost so as to be affordable
- Low energy as energy is scarce
- Dependent on local resources
- Eco-friendly as this is our environmental responsibility
The goal is to provide people pure water by building a clay pot mixed with burn out materials such as fine sawdust that create small pores that act as water filter for contaminants. To further eliminate E. coli, copper treatment is necessary due to its germicidal properties help remove E. coli.
Here is how the filter was made:
The materials are: Clay, Sawdust, Copper, Sieve, & Receptacle.
One type of Porous Pot: Clay to sawdust 1:1
1) First sieve the sawdust, then mix clay & sawdust with water. Mold it into a pot shape. Then you fire it in a kiln, and then dry for a day.
2) During the firing process, the sawdust makes tiny pores in the clay, so tiny that impurities cannot get through, but water particles can.
The copper treatment on filtered water for about 5 hours removes E. coli bacteria completely

This is an appeal to you and the North American community to donate towards providing clean water. All the proceeds will be made available to charitywater.org, a large US based charity organization committed to providing clean safe water to the needy.
Thank you for providing clean water for the world & know that your donation will make an impact!
