30K for the #Istanbul10
Donation protected
Hi I'm Daniel, a human rights consultant from Wexford, Ireland, and now based in Berlin, Germany.
On 5 July my two close friends and colleagues, Ali Gharavi and Peter Steudtner, were giving a training on information securtity and well-being to a group of 8 human rights defenders, including my friend Özlem Dalkiran, outside Istanbul when it was suddenly raided.
While two have been conditionally released, the rest of our friends have not been free since, caught up in the sweeping purge of academics, journalists and human rights defenders perceived as "oppostion" in Turkey.
You can read more about their case here: https://www.frontlinedefenders.org/en/case/ali-gharavi-detained#case-update-id-6180
This situation has had a massive impact on my life and work. Every day now I work to support Ali and Peter and their families during their 'extended stay' in Turkey.
Now, I would like to do something in solidarity with the other eight: Veli Acu (Human Rights Agenda Association), Idil Eser (Amnesty Turkey), Nalan Erkem (Citizens Assembly), Özlem Dalkiran (Citizens Assembly), Günal Kursun (Human Rights Agenda Associaton), Seyhmus Ozbekli (Human Rights lawyer), Nejat Tastan (Association for Monitoring Equal Rights), Ilknur Üstün (Womens' Coalition).
As with Ali and Peter, this situation has brought huge stress for them and their families, as well as financial burden of course. Although it's only a token, I would love to contribute to their wellbeing, as a way of extending our support and solidarity beyond languages and borders.
On 15 October in Budapest I will run "30K for the Istanbul 10", dedicating 3km of my freedom to each of them.
The money raised will go to maintaining the well-being of their families in this difficult time in particular. The donation will be made through my colleague from the Citizens' Assembly in Turkey.
