"MC GAZA"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am Ibraheem Ghunaim (MC Gaza),26 years, a rapper from the Gaza strip. I need your support to step forward to a new stage in my journey with rap. This is the last video I’ve recorded before I left Gaza three months ago. I got a visa to Tunisia and hardly I succeed to leave Gaza after Rafah border opened for another three days. I am now in Tunisia after I paid 2800 USD to a smuggler to insert my name in the lists who allowed to leave Gaza, which this is a common solution most of the people in Gaza do it.

I have worked hard for two years to produce my album "Step 25  " and consists of 25 songs. I am in a new country and in a new stage of my life. The required amount will help me to cover the production and publishing costs. My life still changing and I need your support to move forward.

For my good and bad luck, I found myself in love with rap. The Gaza Strip was not the best place to start my career in such a field. I heard about this art by coincidence at a rap concert I went to in 2005, I was 13 years old. I liked how they were performing this art and saying what they wanted freely. I surfed the internet about this art and its practitioners and I understood that its idea of writing about what you feel. I start moving with a pen and a book from place to another in Gaza, on my house roof and even at the beach. I felt good when I wrote every single line of my new song with a different color. I learn with myself how to write about what I think during my normal daily life. I was reluctant to sing and I was always shy to say what I write because it is not very common in our community and even for my family. Life in Gaza is very conservative and there is no space for performing arts. I have been exposed to many difficult situations that can defeat those who dream but it’s never defeated me. I've always been mocked when I say that I am a rap performer, and hear the sarcastic laughs and the surprised comments.

For several years, I kept going in my career by recording on a computer from a friend house. I recorded a few songs by myself and some songs with the participation of my friends. In 2008, Hip Hopcom competition was organized in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. It is a competition consists of several concerts the judgment of it depends on the final concert performance. The competition at that time has concurred with my secondary exams. After a few of the participants performed their songs and when it was my turn, an officer of the interior security in Gaza came. This person is known for his clout for youth in Gaza. I escaped outside the building as most of the people did, as we know that the disrespect and inhuman treatment is the destiny of anyone arrested. and I met someone I did not know trying to escape using his motorbike, he rescued me by giving me a lift quickly. I arrived at my home and received a call from competition organizers telling that result will be announced within 10 minutes. When I participated in the competition I imagined that I would get the first positions. This is one of the shocks that I still remember how difficult it was. I continued to invest my time and energy to improve my writing as well as my performance. I was managed to produce a song after a while of saving the needed money for it. Until we organized a concert, it was in Gaza only and most of the teams participated. I gained the first position. After this competition, I became more confident and I start believing that success will lead me to keep going in this. I start to pay more attention and effort even during high secondary school tests, which is a fateful stage in the Gazans lives.

After trying to organize my first concerts depending on myself, I figured it was impossible to continue because of the high cost and people still fear attending rap concerts. The possibility of being arrested by the local government in Gaza is always in order. One of my attempts to organize an event, they stipulate to do not mix between males and females and also to identify themes of songs that I will perform. On other occasions, they refused to give me permission.

Many of the details that have constrained me during my life, but I was very committed to delivering key messages to the Palestinian community. Rap has been introduced to places that cannot accept this type of arts. I produced educational songs for children on the dangers of war and conflict and I participated in many events on behalf of people with disabilities, women rights and Palestinian prisoner’s families.

I want to keep going in rap with more freedom now and indifference to the consequences. If you believe I deserve to achieve my dream, support me.
