There are currently over 25 wildfires burning in the state of Oregon, including the Eagle Creek Fire burning its way through the beloved Columbia River Gorge. This fire has blazed 35,000 acres, burned four homes, and forced nearly 2,000 people from their homes.
The dire situation in Oregon has lit a fire under us to raise funds for the Friends of the Columbia Gorge to ensure the Gorge is returned to its gorgeous self. Friends is the only non-profit organization dedicated entirely to protecting the Columbia Gorge. The organization has been a critical player in responding to the Eagle Creek Fire, and will be a leading voice in the Gorge's restoration. With these funds, I hope we can support their leadership throughout this process.
I'm currently a Washingtonian (DC, not the state), but grew up in Oregon, and like for many Oregonians, the Gorge was my go-to sanctuary. It holds some of my first memories of Oregon, and it was where I spent many weekends hiking, swimming, and exploring. My parents spent their weekends falling in love with the different trails and paths.
The restoration efforts in the next couple of years could determine how the Gorge recovers. Let's make sure it's done correctly!
