Raccoon Rehabilitation Housing

Donation protected
My name is Monte Merrick. I am a co-founder and co-director of Bird Ally X , a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation oraganization based in California that provides direct care for wild animals in distress. We also produce workshops, trainings and educational materials for other wildlife rehabilitators. Our largest project is Humboldt Wildlife Care Center , a wildlife clinic that we operate in Humboldt County along the edge of Humboldt Bay

Among the 1200 or more wild animals that Bird Ally X/Humboldt Wildlife Care Center typically treats every year, nearly three dozen are orphaned baby raccoons. Almost always the result of illegal human activities, such as trapping, orphaned Raccoons require skilled caregivers and appropriate housing if they are to be successfuly raised to be wild.

Orphaned Raccoons require housing that protects the wild nature of each baby while providing ample opportunities to learn how to hunt, forage and fish for food, to learn agility, and just as importantly, learn to be afraid of human beings. Success as a wild adult depends on these things.

Our current raccoon housing, built five years ago on a shoestring budget, is now in need of significant repairs before 2017's baby season begins. We have 4 months before our first babies will need to use this housing.

Repairs needed:

Our artificial river, where juvenile raccoons learn to find fish, needs to be completely re-built: concrete, a small pump and filter material are needed: costs - $800

Roof members need to be replaced:

Each roof member spans over 13 feet. Built from donated used lumber five years ago, we knew these elements wouldn't last forever. The time to replace them has come. The five members together will cost approximately $250.

Incidental supplies: screws, glue, assorted tools: we calculate about $100 for incidental supplies.

Labor: Although we try to use volunteer labor whenever we can, in order to be certain that this project is completed in time, we are budgeting $500 for labor costs.

Our total need to get these repairs completed and be ready for another busy baby season: $1650

With your help, orphaned Raccoons on California's Redwood Coast will continue to receive the best care we can provide, and get a precious second chance at living their wild and free lives. Thank you!
