RAISING THE ROOF FOR THE PITTSBURGH ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF
The Pittsburgh Association of the Deaf and Greater Pittsburgh Community Center for the Deaf is located at 1854 Forbes Avenue in the Uptown area of the City of Pittsburgh. Affectionately called a "second home" to the deaf community who reside in the city, Allegheny County and outlying areas, it is the only place where deaf members (young and old) meet for educational workshops, various social and athletic events, and especially host fundraisers in order to keep our doors open to the deaf community.
PAD/Greater Pittsburgh Community Center for the Deaf provides developmental, educational, social and emotional support to children of all ages ranging from birth to young adulthood. We strive to help families understand and cope with their growing-up experience being deaf and hard of hearing. And they also host Deaf-Blind gatherings which provides statewide technical assistance and training to persons who have a combination of vision and hearing challenges. Workshops are offered to persons with deaf/blindness from birth to 99 years of age, and also to their families and service providers.
The building is over 98 years old, and while not the original owners, we purchased the building in 1965. It has a flat roof, and after so many years of repairs for recurring leakage issues, it was suggested to change the existing flat roof to an A-line style. As we are a non-profit organization (501(c)(3)), and struggling financially, we need help from our members, other persons and businesses to reach our goal to raise $30,000 for the cost of a new roof.
In special recognition, donors who give $100 or more will have their name or business placed on a special plaque called the "President's Circle" which will be displayed prominently on the premises.
We want to keep our facility available to the senior citizens, young adults and especially the children of the deaf community who are our future leaders.
