RAOK - Car Repairs
Donation protected
At work today, I came across a situation... an 18-year-old high school student was stranded on the side of a highway near a busy on-ramp. I noticed he had a blowout on his front passenger side. He had a spare tire but no jack. We pulled off to a small paved area, and I retrieved my jack from my trunk. I began teaching the young man how to change his flat tire with the basics: put your emergency brake on, righty tighty, lefty loosey, where the jacking points were, etc. Once we got the destroyed tire off, we realized the "spare" tire that was thrown in with the purchase of the 16 year old car was the wrong size and the nuts wouldn't fit.
Okay, Plan B. After some conversing, it was apparent that finances were going to prohibit a safe and acceptable solution. Calls to parents were not helpful. I called for a wrecker and paid to have the young man's car towed to NTB. My partner and I bought him two new front tires (for the flat and the other front tire which had exposed wire and was close to an inevitable explosion). He was then sent on his way to school with a business card with the case number to get him an excused tardy at the school office. The shocked look on his face was payment enough.
Here's why the fund is created. This young man, Cody Morgan, is driving an old car with unrepaired collision damage and a front end that is terribly un-aligned which led to today's problem. I know without the alignment being fixed, the problem will persist with his front tires being destroyed. I want to get his alignment done at a minimum. Ideally, it would be even more incredible to fix the car, or even send him on to college with a more reliable mode of transportation.
Thank you for taking the time to read this far. I hope we can give this young man an inspiring display of community and philanthropy.
