The Redding Fire Department has taken several devastating hits in the recent weeks. On July 2, 2018 the department suddenly lost their Fire Chief, Gerry Gray. While still mourning this loss, the Carr Fire stormed into the city, fueled by erratic winds, on Thursday July 26, 2018. While destroying everything in its path, the flames of the Carr Fire engulfed the homes of three Redding Firefighters: Battalion Chief Chris Varnum, Engineer Joe Hansen, and Engineer Kyle Foott. The families of these firefighters are forced to find shelter elsewhere while their loved ones continue risking their lives to save the lives and properties of others. In addition, while the firefight was taking place and members of the department were evacuating civilians from threatened areas, Fire Inspector Jeremy Stoke tragically lost his life battling the blaze. Jeremy started with the RFD in 2004 as a firefighter and worked his way up to becoming a Fire Inspector this last year. He leaves behind his wife, and two children.
This catastrophe hits very close to home for some of the Alameda County Firefighters Local 55 because some of its members came to the ACFD after working for the Redding Fire Department. On behalf of ACFFA Local 55, we are asking for help to raise $20,000 for the RFD families who lost their homes or their loved one in this disaster, while working relentlessly to save others.
