Redding Swim Team Carr Fire Relief
Tax deductible
As with all other businesses and individuals in Redding, the Redding Swim Team suffered a catastrophic setback when the Carr Fire burned into town in late July of this year. Our swim family of 300 swimmers and their families were both directly and indirectly impacted by the fire. Six of our swim families' homes were completely destroyed while many other families were evacuated. As a non-profit entity that depends on swimmer dues, swim meets, and fundraising events to maintain its swim programs (which have benefited the community for the last 66 years), the Redding Swim Team lost key opportunities to raise funds for its operations as a result of the Carr Fire.
The most notable of these was an annual major fundraiser, the North Valley Aquatic League Championship Swim Meet, which was scheduled for the weekend of the fire. Not only did the team lose the opportunity to host the meet, which usually raises $16,000 to support the team, the team had already spent money upfront to run the meet that it was unable to recoup. In addition, due to the speed with which the area was evacuated, the team was unable to remove equipment which had already been setup for the meet. During the evacuation, $2,728 worth of equipment was either stolen, damaged, and/or spoiled.
The Redding Swim Team also lost an opportunity to raise another $7,000 through its annual open water swim meet at Whiskeytown Lake. The Whiskeytown Recreational Area, which was at the epicenter of the Carr Fire, has been closed indefinitely and has therefore forced the cancellation of the meet this year.
As we take stock of our current situation, we feel pressed to reach out to both current and former members of the Redding Swim Team as well as individuals and organizations that support youth sports and ask for your financial support during this most challenging and extraordinary time in our community's history. Donations will be used to finance the team's operational costs through the winter and maintain the swim programs that promise to shore up and elevate the youth of our community.
If you prefer to send a check, our address is PO Box 992112, Redding, CA. 96099-2112.
In the memo please write Carr Fire.
