The Locomotive
Locomotive 1210 was built in 1878 by Beyer, Peacock and Co of Manchester England. It was designed as an express passenger locomotive that hauled trains out of Sydney to Goulburn, Newcastle and Bathurst. After being superseded in these duties, it had a second career on secondary branch lines at locations like Narrabri. In 1914 it hauled the first train into the new Australian National Capital Canberra. This link with the fledgling city was preserved when the locomotive was purchased upon its retirement in 1962 by the National Capital Authority and displayed outside Canberra Railway Station. In 1984, permission was granted to the ARHS ACT Division to remove the locomotive from its Plinth and to restore it to full operation. This was completed in 1988 and the locomotive travelled to Melbourne under its own power for the Bicentenary celebrations that took place over the course over that year. Since then, 1210 has been a popular operation exhibit for the Society, based at the Canberra Railway Museum. It has occasionally ventured further afield to important railway events like the 150th Anniversary of the NSW Railways.
The Project
A detailed inspection has been made of the locomotive and its components. Overall its condition is very good, with the main focus of the restoration to be boiler repairs and component refurbishment. This will entail lifting the locomotive's boiler from the frame to allow further inspection and repair work to take place. The estimated cost of the restoration is currently estimated to be in the region of $20,000. Your donation will be gratefully received and allow our experienced and dedicated employees and volunteers to further this work.Restoration work underway at Canberra Railway Museum
