Retired Paramedic Needs Our Help

On Tuesday, July 3rd, retired City of Cleveland paramedic Tony Sessin was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident when he was unable to avoid an oncoming car that may have gone left of center. He was thrown over the windshield of the motorcycle and suffered road rash and lacerations to his head, face and arms, and 5 broken toes. Additionally, and most seriously, he suffered a life-threatening injury to one of his legs. Both bones in the lower leg were shattered, and the fractures also caused severe arterial bleeding. Thankfully, an off-duty Cleveland firefighter, Alex Kundrat, happened to be passing by, saw the seriousness of the injury and applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. His quick action likely saved Tony’s life.
Tony was rapidly and efficiently assessed, treated, and transported to MetroHealth Trauma Center by the Berea, OH Fire Department’s paramedics, where the trauma team worked to stabilize him. Over the next several days Tony underwent several surgeries as the surgeons attempted to save his lower leg. Sadly, there was too much damage done by the accident and Tony has had surgery to remove the leg just below the knee. He faces one more surgery to prepare the leg for a prosthesis.
Tony spent thirty-three years as an EMT, paramedic, and Supervisor in a very busy emergency medical system. In those thirty-three years he made a positive impact on thousands of lives; and he saved more than a few. He gave a lot to the community he served during those years, and now it is time for us in the community give back to him.
Tony is facing a long road of recovery from the trauma, physical therapy, and rehabilitation, and insurance can only cover a portion of the costs. Fortunately, he has a great support system of family and friends, but they can do only so much. We would like to lighten the family’s financial burden as much as possible, so any gift of funds, large or small, will help. Funds generated will be used to defray costs of medical procedures, equipment, and ancillary expenses not covered by insurance.
