Help Us Help Them: Jamaica!
Donation protected
Hello All,
Our names are Elisha Edwards and Lisa Dazzell and we would like to raise $4,000 to help us fund a service trip to Jamaica where we will provide essential services for Jamaican orphans and schools. In order to participate in this service trip, we must fundraise 100% of the costs.
We are Macaulay Honors students at Lehman College and dedicated members of Lehman L.I.F.E., an intensive volunteer program created to bring together a group of diverse leaders whose mission is to travel abroad to underdeveloped communities in order to provide these communities with service. From April 23, 2016 – May 1, 2016, we will be going to St. Andrew, Jamaica.
Jamaica is located in the northwestern Caribbean Sea. When people hear Jamaica, they typically think of the northern coast and the suburbs of Kingston which is home to tourists and wealthy Jamaicans who live in first-rate housing.
However, what people do not know is that Jamaica is referred to as the richest poor nation on earth. Not far from these wealthy districts are a significant number of poor Jamaicans who live in squalor with poor housing, limited food supply, inadequate access to clean water, low-quality health care, and/or lack of education. Jamaica’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is $5,289.97. To give you a clear depiction of just how severe that is: the United States GDP is $16.77 trillion.
That is why our team is going to St. Andrew, which is situated in the southeast of Jamaica. In collaboration with Jamaica Volunteer Programs, we will be working in an orphanage and providing the children with personalized attention and love. Our duties will include: teaching children how to read and write, introducing the children to computer programs, developing their arts and crafts skills, and engaging the children in outdoor activities, sports, and dance. These orphanages are understaffed and employees are overworked. Therefore, our additional assistance will provide these children with so much hope and inspiration!
Additionally, we will assist in building maintenance such as: repairing schools and orphanages, painting, plumbing, and other general maintenance work. It is imperative for us to contribute to the St. Andrew community because it allows us to care for those who are in impoverished neighborhoods.
We need to raise a total of $4,000 in order to cover the costs of the program. With all of your help, we know that we will be able to raise the money necessary to provide service to St. Andrew, Jamaica!
Let your altruism shine through and donate to our mission today!
And remember:
"A little goes a long way!"
"We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give."
Together we can do it!
