Rifat Tawfig's Well Building Fund
Donation protected
We take life for granted everyday. We have seen so much death lately that we have grown numb to it, but today I learned again what it feels to lose a human life, and it wasn't any human life, it was my dear friend Rifat Tawfig. Rifat was one of those people that i grew up with, and he was one of the most patient and considerate people I have ever known. You all know me to be gentle, patient, and quiet, but no one knew how crazy and impatient I can be like Rifat knew me. I remember when we first met in Jeddah and seeing you get in trouble on the first day of school. I remember the time we found out we were going to Waterloo and got excited together. I remember going snowboarding and you falling in the trees and me laughing my butt off. I remember the countless times you asked me questions and I grew impatient with you. I remember how stubborn we were when we sat in the car for hours with Nahar because not one of us wanted to fill the gas. I remember talking about our future, how we would marry and make our children play together. 25 is too young, but there is wisdom in what Allah wills. You died doing the job that you love and for that you will enter Jannah as a shaheed with Allah's mercy. We are all so proud of the man you were, and more importantly i'm proud to have grown alongside such a gentle and patient soul.
May Allah help your family to be strong through this tough time, if there is any good here, it is to help the rest of us see that we don't have all the time in the world, and death can come for us at any minute. Rifat used to ask how to get closer to Allah, he had good intentions in his heart, and Inshallah he will get into Jannah because of it. Let us strive to be better people in Rifat's memory.
Any amount you donate will go to a good cause, and help us remember Rifat in this life, and more importantly, accrue good deeds for him for the day we all meet in the next life.
UPDATED GOAL - Important
Because GoFundMe and WePay are U.S Orginizations, they are forced to comply with sanctions imposed by the Office for Foreign Asset Control (OFAC). OFAC currently has a sanction on money going to Sudan, which means our fund cannot be used to send money there directly or indirectly. There are alternative solutions, as there are people in need all over Africa in countries like Ghana, Kenya, and Bangladesh. I have spoken with Rifat's family and have decided to give the money to them to them because they are more entitled to decide where their Son's money goes than me or any of us. Because our goal has changed, GoFundMe requires that there be a one week period where anyone who wants to get a refund due to the goal change can do so.
Some Key Information for Anyone Donating:
Who I am: I am one of the deceased best friends, my name is Mawia Janoudy. I am originally Syrian, but moved to Canada and became naturalized citizen when I was young. I met Rifaat in school in Jeddah and we continued to be friends in Canada once we both moved there. I have promised to donate the funds collected here to Rifat's family, who will then build wells for those in need all around Africa, in countries such as Ghana, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Kenya. I consider giving water to those who need it is one of the most noble acts a human being can do. The charities we will be using will be Muslim Aid for Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (That has not changed)(https://www.muslimaid.org/dig-a-well/)
, as well as The Water Project for Kenya (thewaterproject.org/).
Once the funds are ready to be deposited, it will be deposited into Rifat's Sister Ayat Tawfig's account. Ayat will then, along with the rest of her family, decide how much will go to each country through Muslim Aid and The Water Project (Both use credit card payments as their method of donation)
