Ride the Divide for Homeward Bound
Donation protected
On June 7, 2016 my partner and I Steven Mchone are taking a big leap. We are leaving the comfort and safety of our home in Asheville, North Carolina and are making the journey to Banff Canada for the start of The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR). It is Adventure Cycling's premier off-pavement cycling route, crisscrossing the Continental Divide north to south. This route is defined by the word "remote." Its remoteness equates with spectacular terrain and scenery. The entire route is basically dirt-road and mountain-pass riding every day. In total, it has over 200,000 feet of elevation gain (the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest 7 times) and covers nearly around 2750 miles.
We are both fitness professionals, avid cyclists and adventurists. As we venture from our secure life here in the Appalachian Mountains to the uncertain trails of the western Rockies, we hope to unplug and reconnect with nature and experience the freedom of the uncertainty of the unknown path.
We feel strongly about sharing our journey on the divide with our community and hope that our ride will inspire others to take a chance on their dreams and jump into the unknown despite the fear, doubt and struggle. We recognize how fortunate we are to be able to take from our lives with the resources we have and the support of our friends and family. We hope to use this ride to pass that energy along to other people less fortunate than ourselves. We are starting this go-fund-me page with a goal of raising $6,000 (that is just over $1 a mile for each of us) for Homeward Bound http://homewardboundwnc.org/. They are a local nonprofit that in 2015 moved 352 people out of homelessness, and saw over 2,200 people at their day center to offer them services like showers & mail, plus get them started on finding permanent housing.
If there is an excess of funds we will use them to pay off some of the debt incurred in the purchasing of our new bikes and various supplies for the trip. You can donate through this campaign or at http://homewardboundwnc.org/donate-mo
Just attach a note on the donation that it is for the divide ride.
We have less than two months before we leave so please help us reach this goal and support a great organization here in Asheville.
We are starting a blog and will be posting videos, photos and shenanigans along the trail as we are able to find phone and internet service. I will keep you updated on the link to the blog. If you are a small business and wish to sponsor the ride contact me Shona Jason-Miller through this campaign.
Here is a link to the Trailer for the documentary Ride the Divide which follower people who race this trail. Although we are not racing this year it will help people understand the magnitude of the ride.
