Rohingyatographer Magazine #3: Food for Thought

Donation protected
Dear Friends,

Welcome to Rohingyatographer Magazine, a powerful refugee-led photography project that captures the essence of life in the world's largest refugee camp in Bangladesh. Our mission is clear: to raise awareness about the Rohingya situation and preserve their collective memory through the lens of talented Rohingya photographers.

Our journey began in 2021 when Sahat Zia Hero and David Palazón united to create this transformative initiative. Rohingyatographer Magazine is a creative platform, empowering Rohingya youth to advocate for themselves and connect with the international community, showcasing their collective memory and resilience.

We have successfully published two issues of Rohingyatographer Magazine, with the first one focusing on the theme of identity and the second highlighting the community’s relationship with nature. Currently, we are in the process of producing our third issue,: "The Food Issue." This upcoming edition will celebrate the unifying power of food in the Rohingya community, sharing their culinary traditions and heartfelt stories. With the recent cuts to food rations in the refugee camps, this is a topic on every refugee’s mind.

However, to make this vision a reality, we need your support more than ever. By supporting this campaign, you can help elevate the Rohingya experience, shedding light on their challenges and inspiring change.

Rohingyatographer Magazine has become an indispensable publication for those interested in the Rohingya experience, community-led photography, human rights, and refugee studies. Our efforts have gained recognition from esteemed international press outlets like The Guardian, AlJazeera, SBS Australia, Observers France 24, NBC, Dei Zeit, Anadolu Agency, Dhaka Tribune, Truth in Photography, UNHCR, Himal SouthAsian, and many more. In addition, academic journals such as Forced Migration Review (Oxford University), Lacuna Magazine (Warwick University), and the Peace Photography Handbook by Dr Tiffany Fairy from Kingston University London have acknowledged our impact.

'Añrá Rohingya' (We are Rohingya), our first virtual exhibition launched on World Refugee Day, June 20, 2022, left a profound mark. The exhibition was later showcased at the Liberation War Museum in Dhaka with support from UNHCR, and it traveled to the Cox’s Bazar Cultural Centre in September 2022. Our journey continued with participation in the Head On Photo Festival in Sydney in November 2022 and the Leipzig Photobook Festival in Germany in 2023. Two more exhibitions are coming up this year!
