What we want to do:
Peers Victoria is counting on your help to buy an RV to use as a mobile drop-in on Victoria's outdoor sex work strolls. The RV will be a non-judgemental and welcoming space for sex workers who are working the sometimes cold and isolated strolls in the Government and Rock Bay areas. It will help them to connect with Peers outreach workers for condoms and other harm-reduction supplies, food and clothing, conversation, or maybe just a cup of coffee to warm up on a winter night. The RV will also provide a safe, private space for workers to report concerns related to violent or aggressive encounters with customers, ensuring that Peers'"bad date and aggressor" sheet is always up-to-date and a useful information source for the sex workers in our community.
What you can do to help:
We need $25,000 to buy the RV. We know that sounds like a lot but don't be overwhelmed. Just donate $5 if that's all you can spare right now. It all adds up, right?! Consider challenging your friends to match your $5 donation and watch the total grow as more and more people jump on board. Can't donate right now? Sharing the campaign link on Facebook or Twitter is priceless. Want to go big? Throw your own #Rolls4Strolls fundraising event to help us reach that goal before the winter sets in. You could also donate in honour of someone you love or give it as a Christmas gift for the special people in your life. We want you to be a part of this campaign in whatever way works best for you--because together we can make this happen! All donations of $5 and up are tax-deductible.**
Why this campaign is important:
More than 140 sex workers rely on Peers outreach services on the stroll over the course of a year, and on a typical night we connect with anywhere from 15 to 25 sex workers on the stroll. Our late night outreach team is out there every night of the week between 7-10:30 p.m., and that service is especially important as the weather starts to change and darkness settles in earlier.
The connection we make with outdoor workers can be crucial for those needing help with accessing permanent housing, health supports, or liaising with police. Others appreciate the opportunity to connect with a non-judgmental Peers outreach worker whose own life experiences inform their work. Those connections on the stroll bring new people through the doors of our Esquimalt daytime drop-in, where participants can find everything from a hot lunch to small business training, health and wellness workshops, legal advice, beauty days, and one-to-one support and referral. To read more about it, check out Jody Paterson's latest blog post.
Thanks for supporting #Rolls4Strolls!
**We welcome donations of any amount, but tax receipts are not issued for any donation less than $5. Donations of goods are also tax deductible under certain circumstances - please contact us at [email redacted].ca to learn more about getting a tax receipt for donated goods. Want to donate monthly?
