WHO: David Edwards, David Savage (support driver)

WHY:     Recently I competed at the Paralympic Games in Rio, which was easily one of the best experiences of my young life. Like many athletes I got there because of immense team work and behind the scenes organisation. However, alongside this I made some necessary selfish sacrifices, which without doing so I would not have had this once in a lifetime opportunity. In light of these sacrifices I wanted to payback some of the belief that was invested in me.

Riding from Brisbane to Cairns has for a long time been a dream of mine. Personally and for anyone that knows the route, despite being long and sometimes treacherous is equally breathtaking and rewarding. The route holds countless special memories to me and I thought since I want to do it regardless it would make more sense to use this epic adventure as a spring board to additionally raise money and awareness for a charity.

beyondblue’s work is aimed at achieving an Australian community that understands depression and anxiety, empowering all Australians, at any life-stage, to seek help.  beyondblue raises awareness, reduces stigma and ensures people have access to the information they need to support recovery, management and resilience.

I lost my mother just over two years ago and I didn’t want it to be for nothing, I know she would greatly endorse this fundraising quest because of her love for riding and helping others. I also lost my Grandma last December and so now rely more than ever on close friends and family for emotional support. I know this story may ring close to many and I hope that this ride can give hope at the same time.

What We’re Doing:

The trip is self- and crowd-funded and pre-planned so that all money raised can go directly to beyondblue. A support vehicle will follow with emergency supplies, spare parts, food and water.

The aim is to complete the 1900+km ride in 10 days, with days varying from 120, to over 300 kilometres on some days. In Parallel the ride is aimed to as much as possible raise money for a charity I believe in, spread awareness about depression and also give hope in the face of adversity.
