Gillies Family Support

We are friends of the Gillies family and want to do everything we can to help ease the stress of the medical crisis they are going through.

Jill and Marc Gilles are two of the kindest people we know. They have two amazing kiddos, Tatum (9) and Gus (7).

On Friday, November 20th, Jill and her two kids headed out on a once in a lifetime trip to California to visit Jill's sister, Sherri, and her family and to go to Disneyland. Upon arrival, Gus ended up with the stomach flu and on Saturday Jill came down with it forcing the postponement of Disney to what they thought would be later in the week. The kids handled the news like champs.

On Monday morning, Jill received a call from her neighbor that an ambulance was leaving their house in Apple Valley. That neighbor was her aunt that happened to be home and outside at the moment the ambulance was leaving - she isn't regularly home during week days so for her to see this was an unbelievable blessing.  Being across the country, Jill frantically started calling the hospital trying to figure out what was going on. She learned that Marc, who had been battling what they thought was a sinus infection, was in a "diabetic emergency" and in the intensive care unit. Jill decided that she and the kids needed to get home. That meant no Disneyland at all for her kiddos. Her brother-in-law found a midnight flight out of Las Vegas and they immediately packed up, hopped in the car and drove 5 hours to Las Vegas and caught the red eye home.

Within hours of Jill getting home on Tuesday, Marc went in for sinus surgery and the cultures eventually came back testing positive for a fungus. This is a particularly aggressive fungus that was attacking everything in the right side of his face. He was rushed from Fairview Ridges in Burnsville to the University of Minnesota in the very early hours of Thanksgiving Day. It was then, in the ICU, they learned this fungus was destroying all the tissue where they thought the sinus infection was.

On Thanksgiving morning, which was also Gus' birthday, Marc was able to spend a bit of time with Jill and the kids before he went into surgery at the University of Minnesota to remove all the tissue/muscle/teeth and bone in the right half his face. It was an 8 plus hour surgery and while they got as much of the fungus out as they could, they couldn't get what had moved into his brain. They said his body, along with medication, would need to do the rest.

Gus handled the change in birthday plans and his sister handled missing out on Thanksgiving like angels. Certainly not easy when you are 7 and 8.

Marc's condition is extremely serious. He is fighting as hard as he can and is still in the ICU at the University of Minnesota. The doctors have said that his recovery will be long.

Marc's job is the main source of income for the family. Jill had been working in the food service  department for the school district but will not be able to during his recovery as she has needed and continues to be at the hospital during the day and with the kids at night.

Any money donated to this page will go to the Gillies family.  We would love to be able to cover their mortgage for a few months, lofty medical bills and other family needs. Let's take a little of the weight off of Jill's shoulders so they can focus on Marc getting healthy and home!

Please consider helping this awesome family out - thanks!
