Pedagogy of Action: South Africa

Donation protected
In May, I will be traveling to South Africa as a part of the Pedagogy of Action (POA) program for the University of Michigan.  Developed by Dr. Nesha Haniff, the program is focused on empowerment through alternative oral methods  of learning, rather than requiring literacy.  All the students in the program learn a HIV/AIDS prevention module in order to teach it to people in communities.  However, the Module furthers this learning process by having the "students" teach the Module back to the "teachers".  Therefore, those "students" are empowered by owning the information, and thus gain a voice once taken from them.  We will be traveling to Johannesburg and Durban to lead symposiums as well.

The program is unusual for the University as we are working within the community in order to learn.  Myself and 13 other students will be joining Dr. Haniff, and other POA alums on this trip.  However, I have struggled to gain funding from the University for this trip.  Therefore, I am asking for a donation towards this trip.  I have never been abroad before, and I am graduating from the University.  So this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

I leave the US on May 21st, so time is very short.  However much anyone can donate (if possible) will be much appreciated!  I am incredibly excited for this trip!! :D    Pedagogy of Action site
