The Rusty Bowl BMX Track located in Ukiah, CA has become a well known, established, volunteer-run track since it was founded in 1984. Despite obstacles such as flooding, vandalism and periods of low rider attendance, this BMX track provides a place where the generations come together for days filled with fun and excitement in racing, spectating, and volunteering. It is a place where kids can have an outlet for their energy, are rewarded in a positive way for their accomplishments, and learn to work together as a team and that hard work does pay off. During practices and races our riders have a safe place to learn, gain experience, and understand many life lessons that the sport of BMX can teach them.
Unlike other sports, BMX racing is a family based sport that is open nearly year round with a season that runs from January 1st through December 15th. Riders have the opportunity to race on over 350 tracks nationwide and compete on a points system that USA BMX (our sport's sanctioning body) has put into place.
During each season the Rusty Bowl hosts several fundraising races which help either our local community or events such as the Race for Life which is a race where all fees and donations that the riders raise go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, or the Warnicke Scholarship race which is a race where the donations raised by riders go to The Bob Warnicke Scholarship Fund and benefits students in the BMX community to assist them with paying for a college education.
Over the last few years, the Rusty Bowl has acquired a small army of dedicated volunteers that donate countless hours of their time to help keep the track and its operations running smoothly. Sometimes, however, manpower is not enough. The Rusty Bowl is located in a seasonal flood zone and most winters we see anywhere from 3-5 feet of standing water on the track. The amount of time it takes for the track to dry out and become rideable can stretch into the spring.
We can help prevent flood damage to the track by paving the turns on the track. Every three years we rebuild the track with 100% dirt. By paving the turns with asphalt, the turns would be well preserved and would not have to be rebuilt for the next 8-10 years. The asphalt works as erosion control that would help the environment and create a surface that is safe to train and compete on. Paving the turns would save the Rusty Bowl money on track rebuilds and those funds could be used for other much needed upgrades such as improved lighting. The maintenance time saved could be better used assisting new riders and their families and promoting our great sport. We already have a company by the name of DirtTrendz to do the required work. This company specialize in project of this type all around the nation.
