Road to Ryan's Recovery

Donation protected
Many of you may already know Ryan’s story but I’ll tell it again for those that who may not.

My husband, Ryan, and I were on holiday in Canada to spend a weekend at a friend’s cottage in Bancroft, Ontario.  On the morning of January 26, 2019, just 22 days after his 30th birthday, Ryan went out on a snowmobiling ride with some of the group.  While riding around a small frozen pond, Ryan crashed into an unmarked, snow covered dock.  After landing, Ryan tried to stand up to return to the cottage but was unable to feel or move anything below his chest. He was carried out of the trail by EMTs and friends about three-quarters of a mile.  From there we were taken in an ambulance down the road to a helicopter that would then take us to Kingston General Hospital.

Ryan’s accident resulted in an incomplete spinal cord compression at his C7 & T1 vertebrae.  Within 7 hours of his accident, Ryan was in surgery for a spinal decompression and fusion. Since the surgery, Ryan has been on the road to recovery but we’re learning it’s just the start of a very long road.

We stayed in Kingston for two and a half weeks before Ryan was stable enough for the 10 hours ambulance ride back to Columbus, Ohio.  Ryan was taken directly to Dodd Rehabilitation Center, where we stayed for 6 weeks of in-patient therapy.

No one plans to become a tetraplegic in the blink of an eye, this injury turns your world upside down and takes you on the craziest roller coaster ride we’ve experienced yet.  The biggest part is the unknown, because there is currently no cure for this type of injury.  But there has been positive results from intense occupational and physical therapy, staying active at home, and maintaining a positive attitude.  We are currently going to Martha Morehouse, an out-patient rehabilitation facility, where we’re working with their spinal cord team with the end goal of getting Ryan back up on his feet and regain control of his body.

We have already been showered with so much love and support.  This support has helped us with Canadian medical bills, in-patient therapy, purchase of manual wheelchair, supplements, home therapy aids, and so much more to help make our home accessible for Ryan.  We are now facing the very long process on relearning so many common day to day activities, which has no defined timeline.

Right now we are in the process of changing the floors in our home as Ryan is unable to independently maneuver around house and trying to purchase a FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) Bike, which uses generated, low-level electrical pulses to the leg muscles. FES bikes provide coordinated contractions via electricity and the motion of pedaling, which provides real aerobic exercise, boosts heart and lung function, improves strength and circulation, builds muscle mass.  Having access to more therapy equipment at home allows Ryan to get in more therapy outside of our outpatient appointments.

We are asking for any kind of contribution to see that Ryan gets everything he needs to take on this journey life has given him and to get him BACK UP ON HIS FEET! But above all, we are asking you to keep us in your continued thoughts and prayers.  I will continue to use this platform to post progress updates on this journey for everyone to follow along with us!  This is a completely new world for us and we want to use this as an opportunity to help educate others as well.   Every dollar, comment, and share this campaign receives is deeply appreciated.
