The 2018 Sac Unified Poetry Slam Team is representing the city of Sacramento in the National Poetry Slam, and we need your help!
THE NATIONAL POETRY SLAM? The National Poetry Slam (NPS) is the largest spoken word poetry competition in the country. We have four poets who've spent years honing their talent to represent Sacramento on a National level for only the second time in 10+ years.
This team is made up of four individuals, one coach, and one Slam Master who will be heading to Chicago for the biggest competition between cities across the world! Getting there is not easy - we need to be able to pay for flights, housing, and food while we are out there. HOW DID WE DO LAST TIME? The last time Sacramento put a team into the National Poetry Slam, we were a heartbreaking .3 points away from being on the Team Piece final stage. This time, we have an amazing grasp on what it takes to go the distance.
WHO IS ON THIS TEAM? We have four NPS-experienced poets on the team, and two newcomers to the tournament. We have
AndYes (David Loret de Mola), our 2018 Grand Slam Champion and 2015 teammate, is a Detroit-born first-generation Cuban-American asexual spoken word poet with Major Depression, who among other projects has spoken at the California Democratic Convention, was part of the City of Sacramento's funding of $500,000 into the local arts' scene, and an active member of the arts' community who constantly gives back to the city he loves. He has six published chapbooks, one full-length collection of his works, and is working on his second album, "Life. Rebirth. Repeat."
J-Rowe (Jeanette Sem) is a Sacramento native educator, activist and poet. Jeanette uses the art of spoken word to help bring awareness to issues revolving around social justice and equity. This past fall she performed at the California Democratic Convention, and Sacramento State University's 2018 Social Work commencement ceremony. She is especially looking forward to making some noise with 2018 Sac Unified slam team. Khalypso, our youngest member at 18 years old, is a former member of the Sacramento Area Youth Speaks slam team as well as a Sacramento-based activist, actor, and poet. She is fat, black, neurodivergent, and badass. Her work can be found in Calamus Journal, Drunk in a Midnight Choir, Rigorous Journal, Wusgood Magazine, and Shade Journal, as well as a few others. They are a Leo-Virgo cusp, they want to be your friend, and you can find them on Twitter @KhalypsoThePoet. Sho Nuff, our 2015 Grand Slam Champion, is a Bay Area transplant, performing since the age of 5, he's no stranger to the stage. He's an actor, poet, and lyricist of the band Blaquelisted. He can be seen hosting at Luna's Cafe keeping the !X (Ethnic Theatre Workshop) tradition alive. Issac"Ike" Torres, our 2018 coach and 2015 teammate, is a performance artist from the City of Trees who incorporates spoken word, theatre, comedic storytelling, hip hop and dance to bring his thoughts to life onstage nationally and abroad. Isaac hosts the Sac Unified Slam every 3rd Friday of the month and will serve as a coach for the team in this year’s nationals. Isaac is a proud member of Ethnic Theatre Workshop, Teatro Espejo and the Low End Theory Collaborative providing arts education to Sacramento area schools and the community. Isaac is currently working on his second one man show manCHILD as well as his first book MasterIDIOT. Jenny Davison, our 2014-2018 Slam Master, is a Northern California native visual & spoken word artist. She's the poetry Slammaster for Sacramento, based out of Luna's Cafe. She participated in The National Poetry Slam & The Women of the World. She’s honored to send a team to the National Poetry Slam in Chicago this August. WE NEED YOU to help us make this dream come true, so we can represent Sacramento on the nation's biggest stage for poetry and spoken word. THANK YOU, from the bottom of our hearts, for giving what you can to the cause.
