On, Wednesday April 4th our son, brother, father, cousin friend and neighbor Saheed “Sy” Vassell was killed by yet to be formally identified NYPD officers. Police shot him 10x, within moments of seeing him. Saheed, was 34 years old, living with a bipolar disorder and was killed in Crown Heights, Brooklyn within a block of his home.

This killing like every time a Black person is killed by police, whether armed or unarmed, was unacceptable. Saheed deserved to live, and should be alive now.

We are strengthened by the powerful response we have seen, where hundreds and now thousands of people have rallied on Montgomery and Utica where Shaheed was killed. Thank you for keeping his name and our family in your hearts.

As we determine our path forward we call on our neighbors and allies to support us in this time. Saheed, left behind a 16 year old son who is still in high school. One way you can immediately help is by donating to help with some of the initial needs of Saheed’s son.

This is what we are focused on. If and when we are ready we will reach out to this powerful community which we are building with, in these unfortunate circumstances, for more support.
