Read on, and THANK YOU SO MUCH!

This 2016 GoFundMe was our first campaign, and it was a GREAT success! Check out the archive below, as well as the 12 updates. It is a wonderful example of the POSITIVE power of the internet, the power of community, and the ongoing vitality of the Sandy Hook Community Club.

The Sandy Hook Community Club (SHCC) is a vibrant “cottage country” community club that provides extensive summer programming for children, families, and adults. The SHCC is very active in its fundraising efforts, but has great financial need in order to continue to fulfill its important role in the community. Our greatest financial needs are in the areas of repair/replacement of the aging infractructure of our 45 year old building. This is the focus of this GoFundMe campaign.

We graciously ask for you to make a donation to this campaign, large or small. Your message of support in this campaign will be shared extensively on the internet as well as at SHCC events. If you do not wish to be publicly acknowledged, you also have the option of making anonymous donations through this campaign, and we thank you for that. For people who may not otherwise be able to participate in our existing fundraising efforts and events, we especially reach out to you to generously support the SHCC by donating here. Please read on for a detailed description of the SHCC: the organization, the people, the building, what we do, and our need for help.

Please share this GoFundMe campaign through your social media.

For your friends who are not on social media, please email them this link so they can take part:

Update posted November 5:

Well, Team, take a good look at what you've got done so far!...

The SHCC north wall and north entrance is not only restored, but improved!: new windows, new wall framing, a new floor joist, new siding, and an added ramp to enhance accessibility to the SHCC! All of this is thanks to YOU, GoFundMe donors!! We also extend thanks for assistance from the RM of Gimli, and very special thanks to John and Yuri from Sundance Construction. John and Yuri each and collectively put so much expert care into this major project, and also into the fabulous 2016 Famous Sandy Hook Pier- thank you, sirs! Your fine work has added so much to the community, and is GREATLY appreciated!

But wait..., there's still MORE work that will be done with your GoFundMe donations yet before the snow flies! Stay tuned...

Update posted August 31:
Many have asked me: “So Art, what’s that Sandy Hook CC GoFundMe money being used for?”… Glad you asked! Have a seat and get comfy- here’s your answer!:

In honour of “back to school” time, I’ll start out this update in terms you might remember from your high school physics class: the concepts of “potential energy” and “kinetic energy”. “Potential energy” is energy that is not “in action” yet: it is built up energy, but it is not yet being utilized to do work. “Kinetic energy” is energy that is being released or applied; it is actually DOING something. SHCC GoFundMe supporters have thus far built up more than EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS worth of potential energy, and now it’s time to release it as kinetic energy and turn it into ACTION!! Roll up your sleeves, team- it’s time to put this GoFundMe campaign to work!

The north wall of the SHCC will soon be opened up. The windows that are rotting out of the wall will be removed, the wall will be reframed as necessary, and new windows will be installed. Additionally, there will be a new landing with ramp access built that will allow for increased accessibility to the north door. This is a BIG project, and it is a project that is being funded through this campaign. Due to “unknowns” (we won’t know how much reframing will be necessary until the wall gets opened up), we can’t yet know exactly what the cost of this project will be, but “worst case scenario” estimates are at the $8,000 mark- which represents nearly all of the GoFundMe funds raised at the time of this update. Work will commence in late September or early October. Pictures of work in progress, work that YOU are a part of, will be posted to the “Sandy Hooker” and “Sandy Hook Community Club” Facebook groups, so be watching for the work YOU are a part of! If you aren’t already part of those groups, please request to join them (watch for a Facebook private message after you request to join the group). Please follow us on Instagram and Twitter as well: sandyhook_cc . Pics of work will also be posted in future GoFundMe campaign updates. Special thanks to Sundance Construction for taking on the wall and windows! Thanks also to our super-duper handyman Jim S. for taking on the deck and ramp. Jim may be putting out a call for assistance when the time comes for the deck and ramp... carpenters: stand by! Special thanks also to the RM of Gimli for supporting this project by providing lumber!

Let’s talk about another physics concept: Newton’s First Law, which says “an object in motion tends to stay in motion”. This GoFundMe campaign is in motion, and it’s going to stay in motion. It’s going to KEEP ON GOIN’, and it’s going to KEEP ON WORKIN’ too, ‘cuz there’s LOTS OF WORK to be done! What work, you ask?...

Well, I don’t know about the rest of you boys, and you might think I’m crazy for thinking so, but when I’m at the SHCC, I think it would be REALLY special if I could actually flush after I have a pee! Believe it or not, it has been more than a DECADE since the plumbing to (and not from, thank goodness!) the men’s room urinals actually worked! We’ve been “getting by” by turning on a difficult to reach valve from time to time to rinse the pee down, but…, ya, that sucks. This job has been put off repeatedly over the years because flusher valves are so pricey, but you know what: it’s time, folks. It’s time to really “live it up”… it’s time to FLUSH!! GoFundMe guys: give a GoFundMe donation for the flush party! GoFundMe girls: you don’t want us all smelling like pee when we get out of the bathroom, do you? C’mon, help us out!

GoFundMe Team, here’s another goal. The SHCC has a shed. It’s a small shed. It’s a rotten shed. It’s a very small, very rotten shed. Wouldn’t it be good for the SHCC to have a shed that is not rotten? Wouldn’t it be good for the SHCC to have a bigger shed so that we could acquire and store outdoor play equipment for the children? SURE IT WOULD, SO LET’S DO IT!!

We have priced out these projects, added a 10% contingency to allow for price adjustments and fees, and have come up with a revised fundraising goal for these projects. Those numbers are as follows:

$8,800* for the NORTH WALL PROJECT ($8,000 cost plus 10%) + $799 for the MEN’S ROOM PLUMBING ($726 cost plus 10%) + $3632 for the SHED ($3,301 cost plus 10%) = $13,231 (NEW GoFundMe GOAL!).

Team, that’s a lot of money, but you know what?... We’ve ALREADY raised more than $8,300 of that goal at the time of this update! We’re ALREADY most of the way there!!

Thank YOU for your generosity to date. YOU will be seeing your generosity put to work very shortly on the north wall. YOU are making that happen! Also, thank you in advance for your ongoing generosity to enable the repair of the men’s room plumbing, and to replace the rotten small shed with a new big shed that can store more for SHCC activities. Let’s make those things happen!... and there’s more to come: an assessment and estimate for electrical upgrades, an east deck assessment… Just like your house, the jobs that need doing just keep on comin’!

GoFundMe Team, these projects that you are making happen, and that you CAN make happen in the future, will help the well-utilized SHCC building to be ready for next year’s great season, and for many more great seasons to come! Team: you’ve done it; you’re getting that north wall done- CONGRATULATIONS! Let’s also get that plumbing done! Let’s also get that shed set up! Let’s keep up that wonderful kinetic energy you have going! Let’s keep the GoFundMe campaign “in motion”!

This GoFundMe campaign is already making great and necessary projects happen for the SHCC, and it can do more, so much more, with YOUR support! If you haven’t donated already, please do. If you have donated already, please consider doing so again. Make a donation to the SHCC GoFundMe campaign part of your regular routine: make it an annual event!... a quarterly event!.., a monthly event!... Make it a habit to support this organization that does so much for the community, so much for families, and so much for children. We at the SHCC will continue to make a habit of making it all happen!

On behalf of the SHCC Board of Directors, I thank you for your ongoing support. It’s been a wonderful 2016 season, and we are so looking forward to 2017!

Please share this campaign, please donate… GO!

Most Gratefully,

Art Zuke, Board Member, Sandy Hook Community Club

*This number represents the estimate for the North Wall “worst case scenario”. We will know whether this is the case once the wall is opened up. If the cost goes down, then the fundraising goal will be adjusted to reflect the lower cost.

Update posted May 31:
The SHCC GoFundMe campaign has caught A LOT of media attention, and continues to do so. Why? Listen for news reports on CJ Radio, keep a lookout in Interlake publications, and also click on the link below to hear an interview I did on May 27 with Janet Stewart on CBC Radio Noon!

The Sandy Hook Community Club (SHCC), located at the lakefront of 10th Avenue in Sandy Hook, Manitoba, Canada, provides robust seasonal programming for children, families, and adults. It is an active hub of community engagement through which community spirit is built and life-long friendships are forged and nurtured. Annual events include pancake breakfasts, bingo nights, family movie nights, talent shows, karaoke nights, dances, and rummage sales. There are two major staple events hosted by the SHCC and its volunteer Board that are iconic to the community: a no-cost Family Field Day on the August long weekend that brings together generations of families for a spirited and inclusive day of friendly races and games, and a Community Corn Roast on the September long weekend that brings together friends and neighbours to celebrate and reflect on the summer that was, and on decades of summers past. In addition to these many events, a major focus of the SHCC is to provide an exciting, enriching, and affordable Summer Day Camp for area children, nurturing life-long bonds of friendship that transcend neighbourhoods, cities, provinces, and even countries.

Additionally the Sandy Hook Community Club has taken the lead in ensuring the ongoing existence of the famous Sandy Hook Pier. For 70 years this beautiful, functional, iconic Interlake landmark has been constructed every spring for the use and enjoyment of all, and every fall it has been deconstructed and stored to prevent it from being destroyed by shifting lake ice in the winter. The Sandy Hook Community Club continues to play a vital role in the coordination and training of volunteers who annually donate their time, expertise, and muscle to this significant, beautiful, practical project that is so important to the community.

The SHCC actively fundraises through annual sales of membership calendars, through fundraising events such as pancake breakfasts, through sales of “Sandy Hooker” clothing and accessories, and by actively pursuing grants. Even with all of these fundraising efforts, the financial needs of the SHCC strain the organization, needs that are all about serving the community.

The SHCC’s rich history as an organization dates back to 1919, proudly opening the doors on its first building in 1928. That original building was claimed by lake erosion, which led to the construction of a replacement building in 1972 that is still in use today: 45 years and counting! Over the past decade the SHCC building has undergone extensive, expensive maintenance and repairs that have included structural, plumbing, electrical, siding, roofing, and eaves troughs work. Today the building is in need of window replacement, particularly along its north wall, which will be an expensive endeavor. This campaign will help the SHCC build up a capital fund for major projects such as this.

The SHCC volunteer Board of Directors continues search out new ways of fundraising in the wake of funding disappointments, which is what has led us to this “GoFundMe” campaign. We are hopeful that you will embrace this opportunity to visibly and tangibly express your support of the SHCC through this campaign. Your messages of support in this campaign will be shared extensively through the internet and through SHCC events. You also have the option of making anonymous donations through this campaign, for which we are grateful.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you for your support to this historic, vibrant, relevant, and active organization, and all that it does!

Gratefully,

Art Zuke, Board Member, Sandy Hook Community Club
